Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, June 8, 2023

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the June 8, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Business History) for Thursday, June 8, 2023 (Season 39, Game 194):

What is dubbed “the world’s first initial public offering” took place in 1602 in this current European capital

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Allison Strekal, a nonprofit development director from Missoula, Montana
Allison Strekal on Jeopardy!
David Ford, a sales manager from Pasadena, Maryland
David Ford on Jeopardy!
Suresh Krishnan, a networking engineer from Suwanee, Georgia (2-day total: $21,099)
Suresh Krishnan on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Suresh Krishnan is now a 2-day champion after his victory in yesterday’s game; it was a game that the writers seemed to want to win. All of the contestants seemed to struggle with the material, and even many viewers at home commented after the game that the material was a struggle for them. Anyways, we’re on to a new day, and two new challengers: today’s challengers are David Ford and Allison Strekal.

In 1602, in response to a company formed in England two years earlier that was granted a monopoly on that country’s trade in Asia, the Dutch formed what is now known as the Dutch East India Company to manage its interests in what is now Indonesia. Its original name was the United East India Company, or VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie). The company was the world’s first to sell shares and have shareholders; any resident in the Netherlands could own stock in the company.

David went back to $0 after the first Daily Double, but Allison decided that she was apparently okay with someone else finding the last one, as she picked the two clues, in succession, least likely to have it. Needless to say, Suresh doubled up to take away Allison’s runaway going into Final.

David 10 correct 3 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 33 (0 today).

Suresh $12,800
David $4,400

Suresh’s late double-up proved crucial, as Suresh was the only player correct in Final! He’s now a 3-day champion!

Tonight’s results:

David $4,400 – $4,200 = $200 (What is London? (Hi Charlotte & Declan))
Suresh $12,800 + $4,300 = $17,100 (What is Amsterdam?) (3-day total: $38,199)
Allison $17,000 – $8,601 = $8,399 (What Berlin?)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Even if the Daily Double is in your worst category imaginable, find it and bet $5 on it if you have to. Keep it out of the hands of your opponents. (Though, Allison will probably find herself invited to Second Chance.)
  • Today’s box score: June 8, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Allison $17,000 Suresh $12,800 David $4,400)

Suresh: I would limit my bet to $3,999 to keep David locked out. (Actual bet: $4,300)

David: Bet at least $4,000 to pass Allison if she misses Final and you’re correct. (Actual bet: $4,200)

Allison: Standard cover bet over Suresh is $8,601. (Actual bet: $8,601)

17 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, June 8, 2023"

  1. I guessed the main rival of the Dutch East India Company—the British East India Company. Close, but no cigar. So I said “London”. I doubt I’ll be the only one to make this same mistake!

    • Michael Johnston | June 8, 2023 at 1:16 pm |

I’m sure. I was initially thinking of the (British) East India Company also, but something about the clue just made me think of Amsterdam. Maybe the date reminded me of the Dutch Golden Age?🤷‍♂️

  2. I got it right for the wrong reason. I was thinking shares in tulip bulbs.

    • The Dutch tulip bulb market bubble… that’s what took me to Netherlands

      • I too guessed Amsterdam because the only thing I could think of around that time was the Tulip Mania. It was fun to get the right answer for the wrong reason! ☺️

  3. I really hope Miyam gets in the habit/remembers to tell the contestants they can wager up to 1000/2000 as it is my only complaint about her and certainly made it seem like David could only wager 1600.

    • I agree—I noticed that she did so today. Obviously the contestants know this, but it can’t hurt to remind them! Also I was pleased that for at least one of the DD’s, she also reminded them of the category. That can sometimes prove to be very important.

  4. “Alison,” missing an “l,” appears in the Jeopardy! Round narrative recap.

(This message can be destroyed when the above has been corrected.)

  5. I got this one because one of my relatives is close to Amsterdam working right now in Holland. But I think the dutch golden age also helped me here. Recently I went back to china and my cousin’s parents invited me and my mom out for lunch in Suichang County because we have not seen them in such a long time. I wanted to share that memory with you all today.

  6. In a New Yorker interview with Ken Jennings about his new book, the reporter noted that Mayim Bialik refused to host the last week of the season due to her support of the writers’ strike, so Ken filled in for her. I am not sure how widely known this is.

  7. I don’t know why, but my first thought was “Amsterdam!” And I am delighted to be correct!

    • My first thought was the Dutch East India Company, but it took me a few seconds to convince myself that Amsterdam is currently the capital (I think because it is mentioned FAR MORE as a decadent tourist mecca than as a seat of government).

  8. Personal-ish message – I hope you’re doing alright and staying safe, what with all the wildfires and [expletive] going on in Canada right now.

  9. So ABC interrupted the show after David’s answer to report on Trump. They couldn’t wait 30 seconds.

Thanks for this site. I might have had a stroke without you. Well at least I would have bitched to my wife all night.

Oh, I did get it right.

    • Same in our house, only we both were griping at the TV like an inanimate machine could make a difference.

Yay! I got today’s Final! correct. This week I’ve fared better than usual getting the Final! questions right. I also guessed “Amsterdam,” but for the wrong reason. I thought it was because of Tulipmania. Oh, well. A right answer is still a right answer. Huzzah!
