I like to take this time to congratulate both Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik on their respective Emmy nominations for Outstanding Game Show Host—which is somehow as many congratulations as appeared in the first twenty hours of the thread on r/Jeopardy announcing their respective nominations. (That, quite frankly, is an embarrassing statistic from a fanbase that needs to act more respectfully toward both hosts on Reddit.)

Correct response: What is the USS Maine?

According to the United States Navy’s Naval History and Heritage Command, “U.S. Navy battleship construction began with the keel laying of the Maine in 1888…” (And, yes, Wikipedia—and by extension, Google—are 100% wrong.) The Maine being the first battleship isn’t why it’s best remembered today, though: it was sunk, by explosion, on February 15, 1898 in Havana Harbor. The resulting U.S. media firestorm, blaming Spain for the destruction, led to the Spanish–American War outbreak.
As with many Final Jeopardy clues dealing with years: the best way to get a correct response on this clue is to do the math: 1889 + 9 = 1898. From there, remembering the Maine should be straightforward. Of course, it’s quite possible that a contestant or two could get more hung up on the first part of the clue, miss the year, and be out at sea on this one.

Unfortunately, Dennis still pipped Ittai for the lead going into Final by getting the last clue before the time’s up signal.

Too bad they weren’t able to play all the clues. Ittai could’ve potentially ended up with a much bigger payday depending on how the unseen clues would’ve shaken out.
Andy, about your “whose correct response sounded rather familiar to me for some reason”, today’s episode was taped well AFTER 2/22/23, wasn’t it? [I’m going by the writers strike (and thus Ken taking over for Mayim) starting a bit more than 2 months after pretty much this same clue being used.] I am referring to these contestants having gotten to watch that episode when it aired, not about the strike maybe causing repeated clues to be more likely.
Oh, no—it was 100% a reference to Wednesday’s comment section.
LOL. Apparently my sleep deficit was catching up with me as I, too, had noted the “dog whistle” on my own in the first DD, but by the time I was on here, I was thinking of the later DD about the Shroud of Turin, which had immediately made me think “didn’t they have a clue pertaining to this recently?”. So I thought you were referring to that. [There seem to be clues about that a lot every year, plus many pertaining to Turin and the Olympics, but any mention of Turin brings the shroud to mind.]
