Another week has passed on Jeopardy!, here’s another week’s worth of editorial thoughts!
Keeping The Game & Episode Counts Updated
As we move closer to Episode #9000, I’d like to provide an update as to the episode (and game) count. I should note that I am using the same definitions of “game” and “episode” that I defined back in June following episode #8900:
Game: A collection of clues, including a Jeopardy Round, Double Jeopardy Round, and possibly a Triple Jeopardy Round, culminating in a Final Jeopardy Round. One game can span more than one episode.
Episode: A distinct episode of the show; an episode can have 0, 1, or 2 full games played.
Friday’s episode was #8950. However, for various reasons, Friday wasn’t the 8950th game, nor was it even the 8950th distinct episode.
Here is the current updated game & episode count:
Syndicated games: 8,881
Syndicated episodes: 8,885
Syndicated + primetime episodes: 8,937
Syndicated + primetime games: 8,956
Full J! Archive (including pilot episodes + Battle of the Bay Area Brains): 8,962

Some Upcoming Projects Of Mine
I figured I’d keep everyone updated on some things that I’ll be working on here over the next while.
- State & Provincial Rankings: Now that J! Archive is almost complete, I’m going to start working on state & provincial rankings and coming up with a highest money-winner representing every U.S. state and Canadian province/territory represented on the show.
- Updated Merch: I’ll admit: some of my merch designs are now 6–7 years old. They’re clearly dropping in popularity and they’re in need of a refresh. Expect to see new designs out in the coming weeks!
- A Long-Awaited Return: A return to the virtual airwaves of Complete the List.
In Closing
I realize that this is shorter than my other editorial columns over the past few months—I wanted to keep things positive this week and be less critical of things. I hope everyone enjoys next week’s games!

I was surprised that something like “ending with a winner” wasn’t part of the definition of a game (thinking of the frequent setups [tournaments, etc] that end with a two day combo game), but I guess three contestants in one game ending with $0 would muddy that water. However, I prefer your definition anyway.
But I am wondering about the circumstances of one game spanning more than one episode. Has that ever happened or are you just leaving the door open to it? Is that related to an episode being able to have zero full games played? Again, has that ever happened or are you just covering the bases?
It has happened.
In order to include extra behind-the-scenes content, both the Watson games in 2011 and the first round of the All-Star Games in 2019 contained 2 games played over 3 episodes; Episode 1 was Game 1, J! Round, Episode 2 was Game 1, DJ! and FJ!, and then Episode 3 was Game 2.
Thanks! I had totally forgotten about the Watson Games. I did watch them, but no longer remember the format (other than that it WAS NOT just one 20 minute [plus commercials] show. I am pretty sure that I also saw the 2019 All-Star Games which were much more recent but less unique to remember than the Watson games, which I already admitted to having forgotten about 😁.
