Warning: This page contains spoilers for the January 15, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category On the Stage) for Monday, January 15, 2024 (Season 40, Game 91):

Paul Robeson said that even as this character “kills, his honor is at stake…the honor of his whole culture is involved”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Rotimi Kukoyi, a health policy & management student at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill from Hoover, Alabama (Friday’s total: $0)
Rotimi Kukoyi on Jeopardy!
Long Nguyen, a retired engineer from Las Vegas, Nevada (Friday’s total: $36,800)
Long Nguyen on Jeopardy!
Roy Camara, a grocery specialist from Crawfordsville, Florida (Friday’s total: $0)
Roy Camara on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Friday was certainly a historic Game #1 of a final—for the first time in the history of the show, two players finished Game 1 of a 2-day final with $0. Long also has a $36,800 lead over both Roy and Rotimi—the largest lead overcome on Day 2 of a final is currently $26,000 (a pre-doubled $13,000) from the 10th Anniversary Tournament in 1993. Does this mean Long’s lead is insurmountable? No. Does it mean that he’s very much in control right now? Yes.

Because of the NFL playoff games happening today, a situation exacerbated by the postponement of the Bills–Steelers game to 4:30 PM Eastern this afternoon, there are widespread pre-emptions happening in many markets. Make sure to check your local listings to determine when Jeopardy! is airing in your area!

Paul Robeson, who became the first Black actor to portray Shakespeare’s Othello in a British production in over half a century when he did so in 1930, described Othello in an interview as follows:

Shakespeare’s Othello has learned to live in a strange society, but he is not of it—as an easterner today might puck up western manners and not be western. Othello’s personal, racial dignity is involved in his love. He might have been much slower to suspicion if his wife had been of the same background. But he is intensely proud of his color and culture; in the end, even as he kills, his honor is at stake, not simply as a human being and as a lover, but as Othello. The honor of his whole culture is involved.

Robeson has since been very associated with the role of Othello; the 1943 Broadway production starring him still holds the Guinness record for the longest-running Shakespeare play on Broadway.

Roy $7,600 – $350 = $7,250 + $0 = $7,250 ($20,000) (Who is Bea Arthur?)

  1. Paul Robeson+”kill”+”honor”=“Who is Othello?”

  2. Because of the playoff game (Pittsburgh and Buffalo) Jeopardy is airing at 2:00 pm on CBS42 in Birmingham, AL.

  3. Bill Vollmer | January 15, 2024 at 6:11 pm |

Not being up on my theatre history, the Final Jeopardy answer meant nothing to me, like as it appeared to be the same for the players. There’s always the rest of the week to have correct FJ responses.

  4. Robert J. Fawkes | January 15, 2024 at 6:17 pm |

For my generation, Paul Robeson is so associated with the role of Othello that this was a no-brainer. I thought that, at least, two of the three contestants would get it. I was kind of surprised that it was a triple stumper. I’m guessing that has something to do with what used to be called The Generation Gap (maybe, still is).

  5. Robeson with the kill honor led me to Othello. No brainer of a final because this is actually a Shakespeare play that i remember reading

  6. Here’s a couple thoughts I had about the game…

I enjoyed Rotimi’s sense of humor throughout the two games, and I especially liked the (what I assume to be) callback to Leonard Cooper’s response for today’s Final. And, I mean… he did lose the buzzer race, and he did win $10,000, so technically, his response is correct!

Long’s playstyle is simultaneously one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever seen and one of the most fun things I’ve ever seen. Sometimes, he’ll ring in so early that he can’t even think of a good answer for another few seconds (see PORTLANDIA $400) and other times he’ll easily pull out responses to the most obscure $2,000 clues I’ve ever seen. And let’s not forget his insanely high-octane tendencies on wagering clues. Who knew Jeopardy!: Chaos Edition would be so enjoyable?

Watching Roy, I felt a little bit like I was back in September watching the S37/38 edition of this competition. Obviously, the circumstances were different, but the outcome for him Friday and today feels almost parallel to what happened to Barb Fecteau in the week 3 finals. (As the player who originally beat her would say, what’s… déjà vu?)

Finally, if I’ve learned anything from this tournament, it’s this – do not make bets involving brackets where the penalty for losing is drinking straight lemon juice. It’s not worth it.

    • When Long said “Five…” at the start of the last DD bet, I was sure the next word was going to be “dollars” — which I believe was the correct bet in that situation. I’m all here for the entertainment factor, though.

  7. I did momentarily think of The Emperor Jones before deciding Othello made more sense. Surprised none of the three came up with a plausible guess, although I suppose they may not have cared since the outcome was certain.

  8. Matt Bloomfield | January 15, 2024 at 7:40 pm |

The PBA Bowling on Fox scheduled for 5-7pm Eastern ran about 5 minutes over, so Baltimore Fox’s 7pm Jeopardy broadcast was joined on the 12th clue of the first round.

The ABC affiliate in DC has moved its 7:30pm Eastern showing to after Nightline because of football pregame coverage.

  9. Andy, I think you have a typo in the Robeson quote — ‘puck’ instead of ‘pick’. I’m not going to offer a “source” as any place I find it is a quote of a quote (of a quote?) anyway, but as it seems to almost be a Shakespeare-influenced malaprop, I’m guessing it really is a current typo.

  10. All I could think of was “Shogun” for FJ. On to tomorrow’s start of 2 Groups of Champions Wildcard that will be through Thursday, February 22nd. Therefore the TOC should be starting on Friday, February 23rd I presume.

Congratulations Long Nguyen! After being at $0 after the Jeopardy round of your 1st match you stormed back for a win from 3rd place entering FJ to a smashing performance in the 2 day Final. Retro Good Luck when you’re appearance on Champions Wildcard happens!
