Especially on the back of yesterday’s major upset of Cris Pannullo, which proves that anything can happen these days at this level of Jeopardy!, quarterfinal #3 is shaping up to be an excellent battle. Firstly, we see the return of Hannah Wilson to the stage after she won 8 times last season. Her two opponents are David Sibley and Yungsheng Wang. Yungsheng advanced through Champions Wildcard this past fall and is very strong, while David has been doing significant preparations to improve his own skills since his regular run finished. I am expecting a fiercely-contested three-way battle in today’s episode.

The Lockheed U-2 was a famous American Cold War spy plane, generally used for reconnaissance missions. It was built because the Americans believed that Soviet technology (which has been given to the Soviets by the Americans during World War II) could not track aircraft that flew above 65,000 feet. Thus the Americans commissioned the U-2, which could fly at 70,000 feet—beyond the reach of Soviet radar.
Unfortunately, these beliefs were rendered incorrect when Francis Gary Powers began an overflight of the Soviet Union in May 1960—the Americans erred in scheduling the flight on May Day, a major Soviet holiday with significantly less air traffic than usual. The plane was shot down by the USSR and Powers captured.
In a Tournament of Champions situation, this should be a relatively straightforward Final Jeopardy clue.

David then went on a big roll, nearly getting to a runaway position, but Hannah made sure that things were still to play for in Final!

Andy’s Thoughts:
- With regard to the $1200 short story clue: The clue said “this…amphibian”, and did not ask for the title. Thus, the full title was not required.
- Judging by just how strong David was on the buzzer overall in this game, even though the result didn’t work out, I have no problem with what Hannah did on the last Daily Double. It was a move to pretty much try to put the game away, and it did not work.

I was born a teeny bit more than 8 years after Powers was shot down in the U-2, but I came up with this one quickly, but I briefly tried to talk myself out of it and thinking the U-2 might have been shot down during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1963. I’m glad that I reverted to my gut before the 30 seconds was up. 🙂

I had Yungsheng winning, which was a death wish for him, since I’m now 0 for 3 in my predictions.
Retro congrats to David on his win. I look forward to seeing you in the Semifinals. Hannah definitely showed her metal here and why she was a great 8 day Champion. Yungsheng got a much worse draw than I expected. David has definitely improved tremendously and is much more aggressive than I remember him in his initial 5 games and that could serve him very well in his Semifinal, but it does only get tougher.
I have Yogesh Raut winning tomorrow, so I have doomed him and Nick Cascone or Jake DeArruda will win. 😉

From just looking at the official Jeopardy website, it appears that Jared Watson is in Semifinal #1 (Podium 1), that David Sibley is in Semifinal #2 (Podium 1), and that Emily Sands is also in Semifinal #2 (Podium 3).
