Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Countries of the World) for Friday, March 1, 2024 (Season 40, Game 125):
Fearful of independence in 1975, around 120,000 of this country’s people, a third of the population, fled to the Netherlands
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Josh Saak, a traffic engineer from Boise, Idaho![]() |
Brian Henegar, a guest services agent from LaFollette, Tennessee![]() |
Stephen Webb, a data scientist from Longmont, Colorado![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
After yesterday’s barn-burner that saw a dramatic come-from-behind victory by Luigi de Guzman, today’s quarterfinal is shaping up to be another evenly-matched battle. Stephen Webb’s unluckiness at finding Daily Doubles in the last half of his run is hurting his standing in the prediction model a little bit, while Brian Henegar and Josh Saak both have had some very strong performances. I don’t know who’s going to win this one!

Correct response: What is Suriname?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Suriname, colloquially known pre-independence as Dutch Guiana, was one of the Dutch colonial possessions; Suriname is on South America’s northern coast. In the lead-up to Surinamese independence in 1975, many Surinamese, who had been given equal status with the mainland provinces of The Netherlands, fled to Europe, fearing a potential loss of economic opportunities post-independence.
Honestly, I think this should be a straightforward Final Jeopardy clue for most ToC-level players, who should hopefully be familiar with the general history of European colonialism in the Western Hemisphere.

Pretty straightforward FJ clue today. The only revelation for me was that Suriname ends in an ‘e’. Who knew?
I knew, just because every time I see it written I wonder if I’ve been pronouncing it wrong as “Surinam’.
But I did not get FJ correct. I guessed South Africa, though I doubted I was correct.
I guessed “What is Ghana?”, even though I knew its population was way too big. I wasn’t even thinking about South America. Obviously I’m not qualified to play at the ToC level. My Finals score this week was a big fat 0 !
Also, Ghana wasn’t a Dutch colony.
I was in the correct hemisphere. I went with Sint Maarten. For what it’s worth, that island is the smallest under two nations – 37 square miles, 21 of which is French, the other 16 of which is Dutch. Also, the shortest regularly scheduled international flight goes from that island to Anguilla (I took the less than an hour boat ride).
I always wanted to visit there but never got around to it. My hairstylist told me he took his wife on vacation there every year, which made me wonder if I was overtipping him.
As Suriname was the only Dutch-colonized country I could think of that would have achieved independence as late as 1975, I guessed correctly on this one! Still, former Dutch colonial countries is a topic I should learn more about.
I’m just proud I actually got a TOC-level FJ.
Wasn’t Suriname used as a final jeopardy once before in the past year? Or maybe it was a rerun I saw it in.
BTW, from one Newf to another, love the website.
There was one in November 2021, rerun in August 2022.
That was what I was thinking, too, but I thought maybe I was actually remembering a wrong FJ response by someone.
If one could remember Dutch colonies that became idependent in 1975, this Final Jeopardy was relatively straight forward. But it wasn’t that straight forward for me. Like MarkS, the only Dutch colony I could think of was Suriname. And, also like MarkS, until I saw the spelling Andy used (I presume he got from the prime Jeopardy reference work for these type of questions the (US) CIA Book of World Facts,) I wouldn’t have spelled it with an “E.” Would Jeopardy rules have made me incorrect for leaving the “E” off?
Basically, the country’s official English name gained the final letter in 1978.
You’d have been OK spelling it without, though.
Dutch colony led me to Suriname fairly quickly, though the year did give me pause. I subsequently recalled that a few British possessions in Central America and the Caribbean (Belize among them) didn’t gain independence until the 1980s.
The prediction you made in the last mailbag you wrote back on February 4 is looking pretty good; it’s likely to be confirmed as soon as Monday.
With all the things swirling around this week of quarterfinal games, tomorrow afternoon should be interesting around these parts.
Despite the rather small size of the population of Suriname, one of the members of the church choir I was in was from Suriname. Because of this, I was rather familiar with Suriname previously being Dutch Guiana. That made it easy. It is always surprising to me when I meet someone from such a small country.
It was an easy Final Jeopardy for me … mainly because I knew that damn near all of the population of Suriname (I know that’s an exaggeration) moved to the Netherlands.
A little surprised to see zero comments on Brian’s winning reaction; not saying it was good or bad, just.. different? (Esp. after the multiple “group hugs” earlier in the week)
The game overall was pretty uneven for a ToC game, no comparison to yesterday’s classic (and yes, I’m a grieving non-Canadian Juveria fan!)
Finally, I got Surinam(e), and think this was a fair and worthy Final J! clue.
Nope, no FJ for me today. Started the week off with a bang and then nada the rest of the way for a 1 for 5 week. I threw out a guess of Monaco, just to have something and nope, not it. Didn’t think it was.
Retro congrats to a very excited Brian Henegar on the win in Quarterfinal #6. Since Bruce brought it up in the previous post, I’ll go on record of saying I have no problem at all with Brian’s celebration of victory. It should be exciting to be moving onto the Semifinals of the ToC. 🙂
Have a great weekend everyone and I am very much looking forward to one of my favorites returning on Monday and that is Mr. Ray Lalonde. 🙂
