Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Books of the Bible) for Wednesday, March 13, 2024 (Season 40, Game 133):
This book is named for a tribe of Israel that carried out judgment of the idolaters of the golden calf
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Ben Chan, a philosophy professor from Green Bay, Wisconsin (1 win)![]() |
Troy Meyer, a music executive from Tampa, Florida![]() |
Yogesh Raut, a social and personality psychologist from Vancouver, Washington![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Ben Chan comes into Game 2 of the Final with a 1-game lead after a stunning turnaround in Game 1’s Final Jeopardy round last night. Troy is still the favorite to take any individual game, but Ben is one win closer to that $250,000 top prize. I’m also interested in seeing how much the momentum changes in Game 2; it taped a scant few minutes after the conclusion of Game 1.

In the book of Exodus in the Old Testament, the golden calf was a cult image constructed by the Israelites when Moses was on Mount Sinai. According to the Bible, the tribe of Levi was the only tribe who did not worship the golden calf; thus, they were the ones to carry out the judgement of the idolators. Later, the book of Leviticus in the Bible was named after the tribe.
I almost feel as though the show, in going back to a Bible category in the Tournament of Champions final, is tempting God (if you’ll pardon the reference) after the Hebrews debacle of Game 3 of the 30th Tournament of Champions final. Though, I will say, there’s likely much less doubt here as to the veracity of this clue.
How do I think the players will do on this clue? I figure at least 2, if not 3, of these players will get this clue tonight.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I would like to say: Troy’s $21,800 True Daily Double was 100% the correct play here. I think it would have been a mistake for Troy not to make DD3 a True Daily Double; it was in the $800 box in a category where he got the $1200, $1600, and $2000 clues correct. I’m guessing he’s probably north of 95% to get that clue correct, considering his knowledge base. That was absolutely the correct clue to rest the game on, and I’m glad he made the strategic choice that he did.
- Chances of winning the ToC for each player: Troy 55.316% (-140), Ben 33.604% (+180), Yogesh 11.080% (+750)
- Chances of each finals length: 4 games 25.784% (+260), 5 games 35.087% (+170), 6 games 26.741% (+250), 7 games 12.388% (+660)
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Troy: Bet no more than $5,999. (Actual bet: $0)
Ben: Bet whatever you like. (Actual bet: $0)

I guessed “What is Leviticus?” Finally, I got one right! (And on a Bible clue, at that.)
Yay for Red Rose! 🙂
The Bible isn’t my strong suit, so I guessed Judges. Anyway, I thought that the worshipers of the golden calf fell into a crack in the earth, as depicted in the film “The Ten Commandments.” You remember, Edward G. Robinson and the gang. Perhaps the movie deviated from the book.
yeah, Judges seemed a little TOO obvious 🙂
The movie deviated from the book a lot….
As it turns out, my Bible study is studying this right now. So rether timely I might say, I got this correct.
I knew the golden calf story was from Exodus. Leviticus is the very next book, named after the Levites. So it was not difficult for me to figure out.
As soon as I saw the category for Final, I cringed because of the disaster of Hebrews/Romans. Fortunately, Leviticus is the only book in the Bible named for one of the 12 tribes of Israel. Thank you, writers, for not digging a new hole for yourselves this time!
I also thought back to 2022 ToC final game 3 when I saw the Final category. Blind guess of Leviticus, but went Hebrews with the clue revealed.
Agree totally that all-in on DD3 was the correct play for Troy.
Heads up: the show has released the JIT field— https://www.jeopardy.com/track/2024/invitational
I am so happy that Chuck Forrest made it to the JIT field. He is my all time favorite Jeopardy! player….from Season 2!!!
We are witnessing a high level of play, with only 3 Triple Stumpers in each of the first 2 games. Troy is looking very strong. We will see if he can keep it going. As a viewer, I want the fun to continue and am hoping for 6 or 7 games!
Reminiscent of a James H. game where a DD wager is over $21,000 and over $40,000 is only good enough for second place.
I thought FJ may have been too easy for a ToC game. There’s only one book of the Bible named for a tribe of Israel and you don’t have to go far to get to it. Thirty seconds is more than enough time to go “Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus.” There, I’ve got it. Triple get for sure.
Some of the posts here seem to oversimplify the broadness of The Bible as a category. Sure, the Pentateuch (Torah) is easy to regurgitate in 30 seconds, but there are 73 books in the Catholic canon, and 66 for most Protestant denominations.
Ben 10 again! Doubt he can win in the long run if that number [Coryat] settles into an EVERY game thing.
I appreciate Yogesh’s sense of humor. Still laughing at that John Smith joke.
That was pretty hilarious! But since I didn’t know the answer and then Ken quickly called Yogesh on his joke, then I got it. Funny thing is that there’s a John Smith poker player that’s played in TV tournaments and I played against him once and if I would have had some guts, I would have knocked him out of the tournament we were playing in.
I found myself chuckling more than I’d have expected a Yogesh’s misuse of “Bring It” to call in a True Daily Double.
Okay, no FJ correct again! That’s 12 in a row for loss! I probably had enough the Bible Study as a kid and no longer remember this or perhaps never knew. Either way, the writers really need to give me a FJ that is NASCAR related, if I want to end this streak at a dozen. I really don’t want a baker’s dozen!
Another tremendous game from our 3 finalists! We are witnessing some great Jeopardy in this 3-some of finalists. 6 total Triple Stumpers, not counting FJ. Very impressive.
It was a great play by Troy to go all in for his DD in Double Jeopardy. In this stage of the game it’s do whatever you can to win.
Here’s to a great game 3 and 4 the next 2 nights. And if Yogesh wins tomorrow, we are guaranteed a game 5 on Monday.
Andy, I remember a short while back (maybe during Cris Panullo’s initial run) that you noted in a runaway game that a score (I want to say it was around $18K) was a record for second place in a Lock Game. If I’m remembering the totals correctly, does that place Yogesh’s total last night as a new record in that case?
During Jeopardy! Masters (https://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=7920), Sam Buttrey put up 20,600 in a game but was locked out by James.
Thanks! I knew you’d know!
