Overall Thoughts: In the first two rounds of this tournament, all three of our finalists have played up to their potential. Victoria has kept up with her incredibly strong buzzer timing from 2005 (Rhythm games will do that!), while Andrew has done very well on the Daily Doubles. Finally, Amy’s clutch buzzer skills over the final few clues of her semifinal brought her a victory over David Madden in the semis.

One thing from the semifinals brought me pause, though, and it makes me concerned that Amy hasn’t learned from her early Masters exit: her Final Jeopardy bet in the semifinal went for the exact same “make sure I cover, but there’s no evidence here that I’ve done the math” bet that she’s done her entire career on the show. Right now, I am not confident that Amy won’t repeat the mistake she made in Masters last year against Matt and Mattea. Doing the “reps” in the less-important situations is important in order to make sure you can do things in the very important situations when they arise. I would confidently place Amy in the top 5 players in the game right now—but I am worried that “top 5” and not “top 2” is her ceiling until she patches this major hole in her game.

So, who do I think will win this? Ask me after Game 1—as of right now, I don’t know who’s going to have the upper hand on the buzzer between Amy and Victoria. If Victoria does better on the buzzer, I think she’ll get to two wins first. If not, this one’s a toss-up.

  1. It’s no secret that Victoria is best on pure knowledge. Amy excels at wordplay/later thinking, though, and judging from this tournament that may be a bit of a weakness for Victoria. If the boards are heavy on the wordplay, I think Amy wins it.

If I can hazard a guess with who will win, I will say Amy will win…Then back to regular games…
