2024 Masters Breakdown #2 — Top Of The Table

Here’s my second instalment of Masters Breakdown!

Top Quizzer + Recent Jeopardy Experience = The Top Of The Table.

I am still completely unsurprised that Victoria and Yogesh have been doing as well as they have. Their respective incredibly deep knowledge bases + recent game experience have equalled some excellent performances thus far. I would say that the major difference between Victoria and Yogesh right now in the tournament is Victoria’s supreme buzzer timing; she’s a full 10% ahead of Matt Amodio in second of the six Masters in that stat.

Again, I Didn’t Really Mind Amy’s Clue Selection

Amy is the only player yet to get off of 0 points at this point, and her loss last night tied Andrew He with 15. She was behind far enough last night that I didn’t mind her going back into a strong category after finding DD2 immediately—if it’s a good category, it’s worth the gambit of trying to pick up some more money before going in search of DD3. I would say that Wednesday is definitely “must-point” territory; a win would be even better.

Matt Looks Like He’s Found His Stride

Matt Amodio got off to a great start in last night’s game; unfortunately for him, James’s Daily Doubles relegated him to second, but I hope that Matt was able to take some positives from his good start yesterday. I could definitely see him at least getting to the semifinals.

Lightning In A Bottle Does Not Appear To Be Forthcoming

Mattea’s buzzer timing, which was the reason why they finished second last year, has not been kind to them: they are all the way down at 29% on the buzzer. That will need to turn around—and quickly—for Mattea to have any chances this year.

I Don’t Normally Talk About Clues, But…

Hyrule in the $2,000 box in Jeopardy! Masters is massively overvalued.

Episode #3 Preview

The pairings for Match Day 3, on Wednesday:

Game 1: Yogesh — Matt — Amy

Game 2: Victoria – James — Mattea

Here’s how the prediction model breaks it down:

Game 1:

Player Win % Second % Third %
Yogesh Raut 31.807% 36.272% 31.921%
Matt Amodio 36.643% 29.511% 33.846%
Amy Schneider 31.550% 34.217% 34.233%

Game 2:

Player Win % Second % Third %
Victoria Groce 36.686% 34.174% 29.140%
James Holzhauer 44.997% 28.044% 26.959%
Mattea Roach 18.317% 37.782% 43.901%

Mattea has their work cut out for them this time; I could definitely see Amy putting Mattea down in 6th after 3 quarterfinals. I’m expecting two close battles at the top, though!
