Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, May 21, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the May 21, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The Movies) for Tuesday, May 21, 2024 (Season 40, Game 182):

Louise & Lisa Burns, twins featured in this 1980 film, told a magazine, “We’re naturally spooky!”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Chris D’Amico, a verifications specialist from Lakewood, Ohio
Chris D'Amico on Jeopardy!
Sam Spar, a CPA originally from Burlington, Vermont
Sam Spar on Jeopardy!
Grant DeYoung, a grocery clerk from Prescott, Arizona (4-day total: $81,203)
Grant DeYoung on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Grant DeYoung comes into today’s game looking to do something that only 276 others before him since 1984 have been able to do: become a 5-time Jeopardy! champion. Of course, Sam Spar & Chris D’Amico, today’s challengers, are coming into this game hoping that they can prevent Grant from doing so. While Grant has been extremely strong on the buzzer in his run to date, he has also struggled with accuracy, giving a number of incorrect responses. (In fact, Grant was the first player since the 1980s to win while giving as many incorrect responses as he did in yesterday’s game.) It’ll be interesting to see if Grant can tone down the guessing.

Louisa & Lisa Burns played the famed Grady twins from the Stanley Kubrick 1980 film The Shining. While they were simply sisters in the original Stephen King work, Kubrick made them identical twin girls for the film.

Interestingly, while it is claimed that it was not deliberate, the staging of the two girls in The Shining bears a striking resemblance to Diane Arbus’s famed “Twins” photograph.

To me, this feels like a relatively straightforward piece of popular culture for most of the older members of the home audience; whether it will be straightforward for younger players is still to be seen.

Sam 5 correct 0 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 18 (0 today).

18 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, May 21, 2024"

  1. I found it easy, but being a Kubrick and Stephen King fan, I know the movie well (and how much it strays from the book). I’d guess Grant would know this one right away, too.

Side note – I think Stephen King is one of two people whose work I was reading in the 1970’s and still read their new work now. The other is Garry Trudeau.

  2. Too easy for me, I was born in 1980 & The Shining was the first movie that ever came to my mind

  3. The Shining is forever emblazoned in my brain. We were on vacation when this movie was released and saw it or first night. I was 15, and had to go back to the hotel (remember, our first night in the hotel) and try and sleep. Yikes.

  4. I saw the movie when it was first released. Living in Oregon at the time, I recognized the hotel as Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood.

  5. I liked Grant and his unbridled joy! Fare thee well, good sir.

    • Like Ken said though, we’re extremely likely to see him back for the ToC in 2025. 🙂

  6. Twins that are spooky. What else but the Shinging.

  7. Didn’t realize Grant used a chair. Was he seated in all 5 of his games?

    • I believe that to be the case, yes.

    • Robert J. Fawkes | May 21, 2024 at 7:25 pm |

Grant even mentioned the chair in one of the episodes when Ken asked him about his height during the interview portion. Grant said that the chair hid how tall he really is.

  8. NicholasP | May 21, 2024 at 4:07 pm |

We already know how the clue played but as a relatively younger fan (in undergrad) I found the clue pretty straightforward thinking about old scary movies with twins.

  9. FJ was easy. Loved the book. Hated the movie.

  10. “I” is the only vowel. And bite is the answer?

  11. A very close game decided by a few $400 clues at the end. One of them, with reference to the Mambo Kings was answered ” Ricky Ricardo” by Chris. Shouldn’t the correct answer have been Desi Arnaz? At the very least, more information might have been requested.

    • In “The Mambo Kings play Songs of Love”, 2 Cuban Brothers end up playing with this “Sitcom” bandleader”. That would be Ricky Ricardo

    • I wondered the same thing, but “this sitcom bandleader” is ambiguous enough that either is probably acceptable because in the novel the brothers make an appearance on the TV show.

  12. I was either 11 or 12 when the movie came out and being brought up by a highly religious mother, there was no chance I was going to see the movie. And to this day I haven’t seen it. No excuses though, as I just couldn’t get there on this FJ.

That was quite the fun game tonight and retro congrats to Chris on the win and we’ll see if he can get win #2 tomorrow night. 🙂
