Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, June 19, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the June 19, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Brands) for Wednesday, June 19, 2024 (Season 40, Game 203):

In 1978 a new cologne for men came out called this, what’s being played in the company’s iconic logo

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Tekla Sauter, a nonprofit strategist from Chicago, Illinois
Tekla Sauter on Jeopardy!
Drew Basile, a graduate student from Birmingham, Michigan
Drew Basile on Jeopardy!
Adriana Harmeyer, an archivist from West Lafayette, Indiana (15-day total: $349,600)
Adriana Harmeyer on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Adriana Harmeyer is a 15-day champion; today she goes for win #16. One thing that I have found fascinating about Adriana’s run is that her last 8 victories have not come from runaways—it’s probably a good thing that she has been correct on her last 11 Final Jeopardy clues!

Another great thing about superchampion runs in general is the wondering if today is going to be the day that the streak comes to an end. Certainly, today’s challengers Tekla Sauter and Drew Basile (a recent Survivor alumnus) hope it ends today!

Ralph Lauren had already had a decade of clothing success with his now-famous Polo line and ubiquitous short-sleeved cotton shirts when he expanded his line to fragrances. March 1978 saw the introduction of Lauren for women and Polo for men; the fragrance used the famous logo of a polo player on a horse wielding a mallet.

On the one hand, this does feel like a relatively straightforward Final Jeopardy clue. On the other: the number of great champions over the years who have been felled by business-type clues has been an interesting trend over the last three decades.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Poetic Objects; Roped In; Movie Refreshments; Oprah-Pourri; The White House; Take To Task)

Today’s game was an Adriana–Drew battle early, with Drew doing well at the top of the board, but Adriana held a $100 lead on the strength of the Daily Double. At the interviews, Adriana had $4,500, Drew had $4,400, and Tekla $800.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Adriana 6 correct 0 incorrect
Drew 8 correct 0 incorrect
Tekla 1 correct 0 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Tekla married someone who grew up a block away from a St. Tekla’s church.
Drew lasted 23 days on Survivor.
Adriana was diagnosed with gluten intolerance; she recommends almond flour in desserts.

Adriana picked up another half-dozen correct responses in the second half of the round, and used it to jump out to a good-sized lead after 30 clues.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Adriana 12 correct 0 incorrect
Drew 10 correct 1 incorrect
Tekla 5 correct 0 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Drew $5,600
Tekla $3,200

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Historic Ships; TV Tidbits; It Was Once The Capital; “G”-Men; General Science; Russian Lingo)

Our turning point in this one was the 16th clue of Double Jeopardy: Drew picked up $10,000 on a Daily Double; from there, Tekla found the last one, and her conservative bet meant that Drew had a runaway going into Final Jeopardy.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Drew 21 correct 4 incorrect
Tekla 13 correct 0 incorrect
Adriana 16 correct 3 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 20 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Drew $23,600
Tekla $10,600
Adriana $9,300

Tekla was the only player correct in Final; however, Drew’s runaway makes him the giant giant killer! He’ll go for win #2 tomorrow.

Tonight’s results:

Adriana $9,300 – $1,400 = $7,900 (What is Axe?)
Tekla $10,600 + $8,001 = $18,601 (What is Polo?)
Drew $23,600 – $118 = $23,482 (What is Jeopardy?) (1-day total: $23,482)

24 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, June 19, 2024"

  1. Got this instantly and I think everyone else probably will also.

    • Figured it had to be named for a musical instrument or sport and quickly came up with polo.

  2. Knowing nothing about men’s colognes, I guessed “What is ‘Golf’?” I knew that couldn’t be right, but…say something.

    • Golf was one sport I considered (as well as Rugby) in thinking of possible sports that might work for a cologne name, before deciding to say Polo (which is a nice short response to write if one takes a while to think of it, though it did not take me very long). I did not actually recall Polo, though.

[The clue did not actually say it was a sport being played, but I couldn’t imagine a men’s cologne being named Poker or Croquet or even Tennis.]

  3. I thought of Hai Karate.

  4. Got this one as I was reading the clue. Maybe it helps I have a daughter who plays polo.

Adriana’s run has been fun to watch. Seems a little old school in that she tends to play categories from the top down (which was the norm for a long time on the show). And the other contestants have tended to follow suit. She knows a lot about a lot of things (pretty much a requirement for a super champ). And getting Final Jeopardy correct is a huge plus in non-runaway games.

  5. From Ken to Adriana, the business-type clues destroy all! Sad to see such a good run come to an end. 🙁

    • Ken actually was undone by the business based Final Jeopardy in the game he lost. Adriana was not; game was a runaway and she would not have won even if she had gotten the Final correct.

      • Oh, that’s true. You’re right. Guess it was just the exclamation mark on the game that she missed the business final too.

Really enjoyed Adriana. She was quite understated and very gracious.

Look forward to seeing her in upcoming Tournament play.

  7. Is Adriana the first superchamp to ever be dethroned in a runaway?

    • “My” statistic for her is sure to change once she has been in at least one tournament, but I am wondering if she is the first multi-champ to have an error rate of EXACTLY 10%. [I’m actually thinking that there probably isn’t even a one-day champ with that record because it is good enough that such a player is very likely to win more than once. Many of the very long running champions had error rates under 10%.] However, a non-champion could easily have that rate if they only buzzed in when they were sure they knew the correct response but usually were beaten to the buzzer (thus had few errors but also not many correct responses), so I am not considering them.]

      • 90% is quite something! I had also noticed what Andy mentioned and that Adriana’s last 8 wins were all in non-runaway fashion. I’m such a nerd that I have a Word document with all of the games since 01/12/22 with Runaway or No Runaway. 😉

Like others, I got this Final Jeopardy as the “answer” clue was being revealed. Mens Cologne; sport being played (identified) in the logo. To me, what else could it have been. Ralph Lauren’s Polo did not help Adriana. Certainly Drew coming up with the USS Midway in the first Daily Double put her winning streak in jeopardy, Tekla finding the second Daily Double put a period on it.
I would that the clickbait sites would give Ken and the producers a break over asking Drew to repeat his response about Bryant Grumbel in the “G” Men category. Though I personally didn’t discern it, he must have left off a sylable. The producers thought he might have, and, when he was asked to repeat his answer, they were sure. Tekla, from Chicago cleaned up Drew’s mistake about former Chicago sports anchor Greg Grumbel’s brother.

  9. Like I said, her lack of Daily Double hunting and inconsistent buzzer timing were likely what would eventually end Adriana’s streak. That’s what happened today.

Drew taking that big swing on the Daily Double was what won it for him, though. Adriana could have bet it all on hers – that may have helped it not be a runaway since she wouldn’t have needed to guess on some of those last clues. But it wouldn’t have helped her since she didn’t get FJ for once. Drew + that FJ did her in.

Also, fun fact: Bryant Gumbel hosted the reunions for the first three seasons of Survivor, and he had a penchant for pronouncing names wrong. Drew, a Survivor contestant himself, not getting Bryant’s name right was hilarious accordingly.

Congratulations going out to Adriana for winning 15 games. Will see her in the TOC for sure.

  11. Tekla’s conservative bet on DD3 probably cost her the game. She was so far behind that she really needed to go all-in. The immediate goal was to try to avert the runaway.

  12. My friend Wendy in PA sent me a text as I was leaving work and said she got FJ and that it was easy. I told her that she put the pressure on me with that comment. LOL. But alas, it was easy for me tonight, as I was able to get Polo very quickly.

Very sad to see Adriana and her 15 game winning streak go, but looking forward to her return in 2025 for the ToC. I have a hunch that we’ll see her hunting DD’s come ToC time, because the game is played much differently when players play in the ToC.

Retro congrats to Drew on the win and we’ll see if win #2 happens.
