Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Geographic Name’s Almost The Same) for Tuesday, June 18, 2024 (Season 40, Game 202):
Legend says in 1876 a dragon built for the first “Ring” Cycle had its neck sent to this Mideast capital, not the right German city
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Colleen Matthews, a speech-language pathologist from Portland, Oregon![]() |
Mark Gagliardi, an actor & podcaster originally from Knoxville, Tennessee![]() |
Adriana Harmeyer, an archivist from West Lafayette, Indiana (14-day total: $326,000)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Adriana Harmeyer is now a 14-game winner on Jeopardy!; she goes for win #15 today. Yesterday, she also joined Ken Jennings, Larissa Kelly, Tom Cubbage, Ben Ingram, James Holzhauer, Jennifer Quail, Amy Schneider, and Ray Lalonde as the only players to get 10 consecutive Final Jeopardy clues correct.
I have to say, a long-running champion like Adriana who is averaging less than $25,000 a win is great for the show’s bean-counters, as it gets the superchamp buzz without overspending the prize budget. Additionally, the fact that her games aren’t dominant runaways either makes for a more suspenseful show overall.
I have an occasional mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

According to 1946’s The Life of Richard Wagner, the neck of a dragon built for the inaugural Bayreuth Festival in 1876 did not make it to Bayreuth, as the London designers of that neck had sent it to the similar-sounding Beirut, Lebanon instead.
If I were on stage trying to solve this Final, it would have taken a lot to avoid groaning at about the 10-second mark once I realized that “Bayreuth” and “Beirut” were the similar-sounding names referred to by clue and category here.
I also think that we’ll be seeing more Final Jeopardy clues similar to today’s (and yesterday’s); as I do believe that Michael Davies wants to include more “puzzle”-type clues as opposed to clues that solely reward memorizing the contents of J! Archive.

“What is Beirut?” I didn’t add “Lebanon”, but I think that’s okay. “Wagner” led me to “Bayreuth” and from there it was a hop and a skip to “Beirut”. But the last time I predicted a triple get, I was wrong. So, we shall see. Go, Adriana!
Beirut simply by itself was just fine RedRose as that’s what 2 contestants answered and it was accepted. Congratulations on getting it right! 🙂
Never heard of Bayreuth.
I, neither. So I just guessed at Amman thinking maybe there is a city in Germany that sounds like Amman.
Ditto! I had never heard of that German city and also guessed Amman. 🙂
But only in English. In German, Wagner’s city would be pronounced more like “Bye-roit” (soft “h”) and not “bay-root”, but since confusion arose in London, then the two cities sound more alike to people there.
Exactly. This clue was not so easy for people who have studied German or who have lived in Germany. The way that Bayreuth is pronounced in German sounds nothing like how we say “Beirut”.
I need to stop reading Andy’s Pregame Thoughts before I attempt the clue. For the third time now I have scrolled down too far after reading the Thoughts and saw just enough of the answer that I have to count myself wrong on the clue. I probably would have known this one without the split-second glimpse, but I have to keep myself honest and count it as incorrect.
I would like to think that geography is one of my strong points. But then Final Jeopardy’s like today’s come up, and, I realize that I’m not as strong in geeography as I thought.
I tried “racking” my brain for German cities that could possibly sound like one in the middle east.
The clue about the Canadian provincal’s governor’s scandal, shows how generaly the US news media ignores Canada, because I don’t remeber hearing about it. I’m sure it was national news in Canada, maybe drew some attention in US/Canada broder areas. But away from those areas? It’s like asking most US citizens to point out the indivual Martime Provinces. (Where I’d fail as well.)
Don’t be too hard on yourself on this one Bill. Not knowing this doesn’t make you bad at geography.
No,just means that I am not as knowledgable at geography as I once thought. Just like any number of other things.
Um yes, Jeopardy exposes many of my weaknesses too, but I’m okay with that. I truly enjoying trying my best at home and when I go for a taping. I will be trying to go to a taping for early Season 41 when it starts back up.
A fairly evenly matched game. Congrats to Adriana, who keeps pulling them out. She has been great in Final!
This matchup of these 3 was super fun! Only 6 Triple Stumpers!
Mark was Father Chuck on the show Blood & Treasure. The first season was on CBS then they moved it to Paramount Plus for the second and final season .I really enjoyed the show
Cool! 😉
And ‘Welcome to Night Vale’ was a VERY popular podcast he was in a few times. [My understanding was that this podcast was one of the reasons that podcasting really took off about the time it started.]
‘Blood & Treasure’ seemed to have mixed reviews at the time and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to watch it or not. Now I intend to.
What a great matchup these 3 players were tonight! 🙂 I thoroughly enjoyed watching this game tonight, albeit 2 1/2 later than usual due to an awesome hockey game.
Congrats to Adriana on win #15! Wow! One thing you know for sure if you’re in 2nd place to Adriana going to FJ. You won’t win if she gets FJ correct, because she will always bet to win, aka cover you. And being that she’s 13 of 15 in FJ, you better hope that you’re ahead of her going to FJ (only happened once in 15 games). And if you’re in 3rd place going into FJ, you better come here to Andy’s site and learn wagering to have your best chance to win from 3rd place.
Go Adriana Go for sweet 16 and match one of my other favorite all time contestants in Ryan Long! 🙂
