Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, June 4, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the June 4, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Fictional Characters) for Tuesday, June 4, 2024 (Season 40, Game 192):

This character in a series of popular books begun in 1934 promises, “I’ll stay till the wind changes”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Travis Kissire, a deputy public works director from Boise, Idaho
Travis Kissire on Jeopardy!
Christina Paul, a foreign service officer from Davie, Florida
Christina Paul on Jeopardy!
Adriana Harmeyer, an archivist from West Lafayette, Indiana (4-day total: $91,800)
Adriana Harmeyer on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Much like I said with Amar Kakirde last Tuesday, our current 4-day champion Adriana Harmeyer looks to become the 277th 5-time champion on Jeopardy. The prediction model gives her about a 55% chance of winning today over challengers Christina Paul (Davie, FL) and Travis Kissire (Boise, ID). I had a slight internal debate this morning as to whether or not “foreign service” should be capitalized here at The Jeopardy! Fan; after discovering that Britannica has an article about the term generally—meaning, it does not appear to be a position relating specifically to the United States Foreign Service—I do not believe it should be.

I have an occasional mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

While most people associate Mary Poppins with being the title character of the smash hit Disney film of the 1960s, she originated as the title character of a series of P.L. Travers children’s books; in all, eight were published between 1934 and 1988.

Interestingly, the 2013 film Saving Mr. Banks paints a bit of revisionist history over the enmity between Travers and Disney; Travers was not a fan of the Disney film, to the extent that her last will bans any American adaptation of the Mary Poppins story in any form of media.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Tree-Via; Common Bonds; Other Good Books; 21st Century Sports; Eurofood; What “Iz” It?)

While Adriana got off to the best start, picking up 8 correct, it was Christina who found the Daily Double on her own first clue selection. Unfortunately, an incorrect response dropped her back to $0. At the break, Adriana had $4,000 to Travis’s $2,600 and Christina’s $600.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Adriana 8 correct 0 incorrect
Travis 3 correct 0 incorrect
Christina 3 correct 1 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Travis has an owl box in his backyard.
Christina couldn’t make it to her brother’s wedding due to a volcanic eruption.
Adriana has great handwriting, and can also decode others’ bad handwriting.

Adriana had a good second half of the round as well to extend her lead, in spite of a $1,000 incorrect response on the last clue of the round.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Adriana 14 correct 1 incorrect
Travis 5 correct 1 incorrect
Christina 4 correct 2 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: June 4 Ever More; Idioms & Expressions; Modern Potpourri; Feeling A Little Art “C”; Any Port; In A Storm)

Travis had a good start to the round, but his momentum was halted by a Daily Double miss—and he wasn’t heard at all over the final 18 clues. Amazingly, Adriana was the only player with a correct response over the final 15 clues (she had 8 of them) as she cruised to a runaway going into Final.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Adriana 27 correct 2 incorrect
Travis 10 correct 2 incorrect
Christina 6 correct 3 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 18 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Adriana $17,400
Travis $4,800
Christina $2,400

Adriana and Travis were correct in Final; Adriana is now a 5-day champion!

Tonight’s results:

Christina $2,400 – $2,400 = $0 (Who is The Wiza Winnie the Pooh)
Travis $4,800 + $4,799 = $9,599 (Who is Mary Poppins?)
Adriana $17,400 + $7,000 = $24,400 (Who is Mary Poppins Poppins?) (5-day total: $116,200)

(Scores: Adriana $17,400 Travis $4,800 Christina $2,400)

Adriana: Bet no more than $7,800. (Actual bet: $7,000)

Christina: I’d go all in here, just in case Travis makes a bet and is incorrect. (Actual bet: $2,400)

Travis: Due to the fact that you have more money going into Final Jeopardy than Christina does, you’re guaranteed second place if you bet $0. (Actual bet: $4,799)

  1. I tried to think of a character who would float in with the wind but didn’t think of Mary Poppins with her umbrella. With time running short went with Mr. Toad (because of the word ‘wind’ in ‘Wind in the Willows’)

  2. I am very surprised there were so many books. I thought there was only one. The author was, indeed, unhappy with the film portrayal as she wanted the character to be darker. I am disappointed with myself for not knowing better. I have been a chimney sweep for 40 years and still wear my top hat!

  3. That one I remembered, having read it and watched it in my childhood.

  4. Jim Cardillo | June 4, 2024 at 9:50 am |

Christopher Robin was the first thing that came to mind for me.

  5. Michael+R | June 4, 2024 at 11:00 am |

RIP Richard Sherman, who died just last week. Academy award winner (w/ brother Robert) for Mary Poppin’s musical score, as well as Best song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee.”

  6. I recalled Mary Poppins saying this in the movie. I knew that the movie was preceded by a series of children’s books, although I never read any of them.

How did the 2018 sequel “Mary Poppins Returns” get past the ban in Travers’ last will?

  7. Interesting that Adriana has only found 6 Daily Doubles in 5 games, but makes sense as she does not seem to be hunting them the way most current players do. Credit to her, though, what she’s doing seems to be working.

The part of the answer (clue) quoting the subject saying “I’ll stay until the wind changes,” is what lead me to “Who is Mary Poppins?” Though I didn’t recall hearing say that in the Disney movie. I also didn’t know that Mary Travers wrote a series of books about Mary. (Didn’t know the name of Mary’s creator until “Saving Mr. Banks.”
Andy, if “Saving Mr. Banks” is revisionist, how did Disney manage to get the rights to do the original Mary Poppins, much less Mary Poppins Returns?
On the Microsoft start page on my surface clone, I found two Jeopardy quizs, with answers from previous shows in two broad categories, Sports, and, the 70’s. I took them, did all right. Definetly not multiple game winner results, but maybe a game winner result, with some luck.

    • Mary Travers didn’t write the Mary Poppins books. They were written by P.L. Travers (Pamela Lyndon Travers).

      • Bill Vollmer | June 5, 2024 at 11:43 am |

The question still remains; if Travers was so opposed to Disney doing anything with Mary Poppins (or, any other characters she may have created,) that she left a stipulation in her will to not allow “an American adaptation in any media,” how did Disney get the rights? Especially if, as Andy wrote, “Saving Mr. Banks” was a revision as to what went on between Disney, and, Travers.

Somehow, in one of the dark recesses of my mind, I recalled Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins saying, “I shall stay until the wind changes.” That’s what led me to the correct response. I can almost hear her saying that line now. 🙂

    • I seem to vaguely recall Mary referring back to that “shall stay until the wind changes” statement when she decides the time has come for her to leave them. Does anyone else remember it that way?

  10. I had no idea but I broke into laughter when I read the answer.

  11. We are very proud here in the Hoosier State to have a five-time Jeopardy! champion!

    • 🙂

    • And from what I can tell off of searching on J! Archive, Adriana is now…

Only the third five-time champion to be introduced as being from Indiana
The highest-earning Hoosier when not adjusting for doubled dollar values (and the first to win at least a flat $100,000 in regular play)
The second-highest-earning Hoosier of all time when adjusting; only Bruce Ikawa ($80,699 x 2 from original run, $6,000 combined from ToC and UToC consolation prizes, $167,398 total) stands ahead of her

      Aren’t numbers fun? 🙂
