Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, June 5, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the June 5, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category British Places) for Wednesday, June 5, 2024 (Season 40, Game 193):

This city owes much of its early history to a temple dedicated to Sulis Minerva & a “sacred spring” found there

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Allee Mead, a writer from Grand Forks, North Dakota
Allee Mead on Jeopardy!
Kyle Sorlie Titlow, a geographer from Washington, D.C.
Kyle Sorlie Titlow on Jeopardy!
Adriana Harmeyer, an archivist from West Lafayette, Indiana (5-day total: $116,200)
Adriana Harmeyer on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

We have our third five-time champ of Season 40—and all of them thus far have been women with first names beginning with the letter A. With her win yesterday, Adriana Harmeyer joins Alison Betts and Amy Hummel as having qualified for the 32nd Tournament of Champions in early 2025. However, neither Alison nor Amy got to six victories. Will Adriana get victory number six today? Our challengers today are D.C.’s Kyle Sorlie Titlow and North Dakota’s Allee Mead.

Bath, located in Somerset in South West England, was known as Aquae Sulis; Sulis was a Celtic goddess associated with Minerva. A temple to Sulis Minerva was built and the natural hot springs in the area were utilized for the Roman baths.

The area is still a major British tourist attraction, though the old Roman baths were closed in 1978 after a swimmer died after being infected with a deadly pathogen from the water. Today, tourists can instead use the modern Thermae Bath Spa and a refurbished Cross Bath.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Feeling The Buzz; Signs Of The Zodiac; “Gate”keeping; North American Geography; Pop Music; The Real Red Tails)

Adriana started out very well in her quest for win #6; seven correct, including a $1,000 rebound on a “Know Your Canada” error by Kyle, meant she had a big lead after 15 clues. At the break, Adriana had $3,600 to Kyle’s $1,000 and Allee’s $400.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Adriana 7 correct 0 incorrect

Allee 1 correct 1 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Allee received a Sears typewriter—from Santa—for Christmas in second grade.
Kyle studied public transportation in Argentina.
Adriana would like to travel with some of her winnings.

Allee had a very strong second half of the round, picking up 8 correct—and the Daily Double—to pull within $400 of Adriana’s lead.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Adriana 10 correct 0 incorrect
Allee 9 correct 1 incorrect
Kyle 7 correct 2 incorrect

Kyle $1,600

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: U.S. Rep. & Prez; Public Transportation; Alliterative Television Shows; Science Quiz; 21st Century Books; City Slang)

An interesting round strategically saw the Daily Doubles come out very late; Adriana got them both, splitting them with a pair of $2,000 wagers. From there, she was fortunate that Allee chose not to signal on any of the final three clues, letting them all fall for Triple Stumpers as she fell just one clue short of remaining in contention going into Final Jeopardy.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Adriana 22 correct 2 incorrect
Allee 14 correct 1 incorrect
Kyle 11 correct 5 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 18 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Adriana $19,400
Allee $9,400
Kyle $2,400

All three players got Final Jeopardy correct; Adriana is now a 6-day champion; she’ll play for win #7 tomorrow.

Tonight’s results:

Kyle $2,400 + $2,399 = $4,799 (What is Bath?)
Allee $9,400 + $0 = $9,400 (What is Bath?)
Adriana $19,400 + $500 = $19,900 (What is Bath?) (6-day total: $136,100)

  1. “What is Bath?” If you know, you know. But it might be possible to figure this one out from “sacred spring”. I predict a triple get.

    • Agree. “sacred spring” did it for me, too. Got to visit Bath and found the Roman bath fascinating. The engineering and water works were awesome.

      • Robert J. Fawkes | June 5, 2024 at 6:46 pm |

Pretty straight forward. “Sacred spring” pretty much says it all. This was a TINA (there is no alternative) clue for me, couldn’t think of anything else that fit.

  2. Easy one if you’ve been there. You can still tour the ancient baths, you just can’t bathe in them anymore. I spent two nights in Bath on a side trip from London. Well worth your time, and they have some very good gastropubs there so don’t worry about the food.

  3. I admit I stared at this one because my knowledge of Roman Empire-era Britain is weak. And then I saw the answer and facepalmed.

I feel like I should have known this, but I don’t know how I would’ve figured it out in 30 seconds.

    Feels like a pure YEKIOYD.

  4. I had already decided that my blind guess would be Bath lol

  5. I’ve guessed correctly (“sacred spring” -> spa -> Bath, because I don’t know any other).

  6. FJ was super easy. When I saw “sacred spring” it hit me instantly.

  7. Yeah, this was an easy FJ. It took me 20 seconds to remove the distracting elements to focus on the obvious. This would have been even easier without any distractions – but those are why I liked this clue. And remember, easy FJ clues help keep the betting aggressive.

Shame Allee didn’t play to win. It’s not that difficult to take an educated guess when getting it right means you’re in contention and getting it wrong changes nothing. At that point, the players didn’t know that there would be cake on FJ. Taking a stab is best. I’m also similarly baffled that Adriana kept in the same category after her first DD. Kyle I don’t blame since he needed some capital to have a shot, but Adriana could have lost the game if Allee found it and converted a big bet.

    • Yeah, mystifying strategy. I don’t know how it will play out when Adriana gets to the bigs. But it works for the moment, and there’ll be plenty of time to brush up on strategy between now and the TOC, right? Right?
      Hopefully…

During those last clues, I was whispering under my breath, “Pleistocene?” as a total guess for the sabre tooth clue… I would never have buzzed in normally. But if I’d been in that situation (and had any presence of mind at all), I would be kicking myself for not daring an answer, even one that I had zero confidence in.

You gotta take the shot! In it to win it, and all that. I mean, if you don’t, you’ve already lost anyway. What more do you have to lose, except maybe 2nd? Potentially losing a grand vs. potentially being the champ? I think a guess is imperative, as long as you realize the spot you’re in.

But that’s the key, right? Situational awareness.
      🤔

Tornado news coverage in the Baltimore / DC area this evening preempted Jeopardy airings. Baltimore’s Fox affiliate cut away a little before the first commercial break in the 7pm slot (13th clue revealed but not responded to). Checked DC’s ABC station and they had also switched to weather coverage, which carried into Jeopardy’s 7:30pm slot. They have a chyron that tonight’s Wheel episode will run at 1am tonight, no word yet on the Jeopardy episode.

This Final.Jeopardy might fall under the “I might have gotten it, if only I’d thought hard about” column.
I’ve heard of Bath, think I might’ve heard about the springs there.
Yet, though I’m sure it didn’t fit the category, my mind went to the story of King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake. Why, I don’t know.

  10. I’m sure this has been covered before, so be gentle?

Do we have any stats to show that contestants’ professions or livelihoods don’t influence choice of the day’s categories? Yeah, the contestants are picked months in advance, but what about the categories?

I know it just has to be coincidence (every time I see it), but today was… um, highly coincidental?

Geography, okay, that’s just a handy thing for any contestant. But public transportation too?

If that’s coincidence, I’ve got to imagine the producers facepalming!
    🤦‍♂️

    • The categories for each game are picked well before the contestants are. Ken has even gone so far as to mention this in cases where it occurs during Final Jeopardy, like Mattea Roach getting a clue about O Canada.

Swapping out or removing material because it’s in the wheelhouse of a contestant is just as illegal as choosing material because it’s in the wheelhouse of a contestant.

      • Hmm, that’s a good point; I’d never thought about it that way.

Ironically, the next game had a rabbi and “women in the Bible,” lol

Nevertheless, I agree with your point.
