(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

On Richard Nixon’s famous trip to China in 1972, Nixon made a point of reciting the poetry of Chairman Mao, in both speeches and in discussions with Chinese premier Zhou Enlai. Much of Mao’s poetry was inspired by past Chinese emperors, especially the Tang and Song dynasties—writing poetry was a task expected of many past emperors of China. The Poems of Mao Zedong, first allowed to be published in Beijing in 1963, have been translated and published in English since.

Assuming a contestant associates 1972 with Nixon’s visit to China, it should be a relatively straightforward jump over to successfully naming Chairman Mao here.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: That’s So 1990s; Michigan; 4-Syllable Words; I Got Rhythm; The Mail Perspective; Tv Coupling)

Adriana found the first Daily Double shortly before the break; her pedestrian $2,000 wager, though, meant that she still led after she couldn’t come up with that word, though. At 15 clues, Adriana had $2,600 to Kevin’s $1,400 and Amogha’s $600.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Adriana 8 correct 1 incorrect
Kevin 2 correct 0 incorrect
Amogha 2 correct 0 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Amogha is a founder of a diagnostic start-up.
Kevin caddied at a pair of PGA Western Opens.
Adriana has been wearing a cameo necklace from her grandmother.

While Kevin did well at the bottom of the board including the bottom two clues in his home state, Adrianna still held a $1,400 lead after 30 clues.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Adriana 15 correct 2 incorrect
Kevin 6 correct 0 incorrect
Amogha 3 correct 0 incorrect

Kevin $4,400
Amogha $1,000

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Biblical Geography; Braving The Elements’ Symbols; Movies’ Opening Lines; Americana; A Little Knowledge; A Dangerous Thing)

Adriana found DD2 and jumped out to a big lead, but Kevin used the Bible category to good use—for the first time all week, Adriana didn’t have a runaway going into Final Jeopardy.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Adriana 27 correct 2 incorrect
Kevin 15 correct 1 incorrect
Amogha 8 correct 3 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 18 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Adriana $19,600
Kevin $13,600
Amogha $3,600

Amogha and Adriana were both correct in Final Jeopardy—that makes Adriana an 8-game champion! She’ll be back Monday to go for win #9.

Tonight’s results:

Amogha $3,600 + $1,600 = $5,200 (Who is Zhedong?)
Kevin $13,600 – $6,300 = $7,300 (Who is Deng?)
Adriana $19,600 + $7,800 = $27,400 (Who is Mao Zedong?) (8-day total: $183,100)

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Adriana $19,600 Kevin $13,600 Amogha $3,600)

Adriana: Standard cover bet over Kevin is $7,601. (Actual bet: $7,800)

Kevin: If Adriana makes a cover bet, she’ll fall to $11,999. Thus, the most you should bet is $1,200, giving you the best chance at victory. (Actual bet: $6,300)

Amogha: Bet whatever you like—you have no chance at victory unless Adriana and Kevin both significantly overbet. (Actual bet: $1,600)

22 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, June 7, 2024"

  1. “Who is Mao Tse-Tung?” (I hope my spelling would be acceptable.) 1972, Nixon, Chinese poetry—once again, I will predict a triple get. What really interests me—will Adriana score another runaway?

    • I would have just said Chairman Mao and not worried about the last name and hoped that was enough. But yeah, that was my guess given I knew they must be talking about the China visit.

    • Diganta Das | June 7, 2024 at 10:47 am |

The same thought came to my mind. When Nixon visited, that was the spelling that most people used.

  2. To quote Mr. Spock, “There is an old Vulcan proverb: only Nixon could go to China.”

My answer here would be Mao. I’m hoping that would be sufficient.

  3. I got the answer based only on the timing. I did not know Mao wrote poetry. /shrug

  4. Katerina E. | June 7, 2024 at 11:23 am |

I initially went with Mao, but then decided that since he was the one that I heard most about Nixon meeting with, I changed to Chou En-lai. It could be a triple get, but I wouldn’t be shocked if at least one went with Chou instead of Mao.

  5. I guessed Mao Zedong. Luckily it wasn’t Zhou Enlai.

  6. Jay Rosenberg | June 7, 2024 at 12:34 pm |

When I was I kid in the 60’s I thought Zhou Enlai was a female because to me it sounded like Joanne Lei.

  7. Ok, MasterDoge, I am now going to assume from the facts that you gave me a couple of days ago, that Adriana is now the winningest Jeopardy! champion from The Hoosier State in both number of wins and total money won. Would love to see her make it to 10 wins and even beyond!

    • Yep! I commented what I did about two hours before it was posted; however, the first six letters in the official name for the Hoosier State (presumably) caused the comment to be held in moderation for that time. You’d think I’d have learned from my mistakes after it happened on Tuesday, but clearly, I did not!

  8. Update for Kathleen on Tuesday:

Adriana has passed Bruce Ikawa’s money total adjusted for doubling and Christopher Short’s 6-game run, and is now both the longest-reigning and highest-winning player from Indiana 🙂

  9. Bill Vollmer | June 7, 2024 at 5:16 pm |

Another Final Jeopardy which falls into the “If I had thought about it..” category for me. MAYBE if I had reasoned out Nixon, and, 1972, I would’ve gotten this. Like most commenters here I didn’t know Mao wrote poetry.
I know Amogha’s spelling of Mao’s given name was acceptable. I’m just not sure why.
Wheel is ending their season tonight, Pat Sajac’s last show. When is Jeopardy ending it’s season? I presume that from the Monday following the close, until around Labor Day, highlights from this seasons various competitions will be reaired.

    • Jeopardy’s season ends July 26.

    • Jeff Bernstein | June 7, 2024 at 9:14 pm |

      Wheel always have shorter seasons

    • Enos Williams | June 8, 2024 at 12:03 am |

I’m not sure why it was accepted either, but this is not the first time they’ve accepted solely the first name of a Chinese leader as correct. I would expect J! contestants, of all people, to be familiar with Chinese naming conventions.

      • Bill Vollmer | June 10, 2024 at 1:21 pm |

Amogha did give Mao’s first nad last name, except she spelled his first name Zhedong, unlike Adriana, who wrote Zedong. Is the added H due to a different translation of “simplified chinese”?

        • “Mao” would have been sufficient because that was his family name (surname). Zhedong (and yes, Zedong would be fine since it’s just a transliteration, and let’s not get all Pinyin!), while correct, wouldn’t be necessary for the response to be right.

  10. Final seemed basic to me.

An impressive week by Adriana. She is on a nice run.

  11. I knew it was the leader in China, but the name escaped me. I was born in 1968, so I’ll use that as my excuse. LOL. Still should have known.

Retro congrats to Adriana the Archivist on running the week and now being up to a very impressive 8 game winning streak. Can’t wait to see how she does on Monday. 🙂

The only day that Jeopardy won’t be pushed to a later time next week is on Tuesday. Otherwise the NHL Final and NBA Finals will be in the way. I have no interest in the basketball, but the hockey I will be watching.

    • I have noticed that Adriana is one of the few champions this season and maybe even last season to maintain an error rate under 10%.
