(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Shira Gluck on Jeopardy!

The Butler Act is best known today as being the law challenged by John T. Scopes and the American Civil Liberties Union that prohibited teaching evolution in the state of Tennessee; the trial, known as the Scopes Monkey Trial, was designed to attract intense national publicity onto Dayton, Tennessee, and the act itself. high-profile lawyers William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow were the prosecuting and defense attorneys. While Scopes was found guilty, the verdict was overturned on a technicality.

Game Recap & Tonight’s Game Stats:

Looking to find out who won Jeopardy! today? Here’s the Thursday, June 6, 2024 Jeopardy! by the numbers, along with a recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Historic Telegrams; I Got A Beef With You; Playing With Movie Dolls; Travel & Tourism; One Letter Says It All; Animal Planet)

Five incorrect responses, including on the Daily Double by Shira, meant that nobody really gained a foothold early. Through 15 clues, Shira and Benjamin both had $1,200, while Adriana had $1,000.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Shira 3 correct 2 incorrect
Benjamin 4 correct 1 incorrect
Adriana 4 correct 2 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Shira worked on one of Michelle Obama’s books.
Benjamin recently made his Broadway debut as a producer.
Adriana tried out for the Teen Tournament many years ago.

Adriana definitely had the run of the buzzer in the second half of the round, picking up 8 correct responses to jump into a lead through 30 clues.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Adriana 12 correct 2 incorrect
Shira 6 correct 2 incorrect
Benjamin 7 correct 1 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Adriana $4,800
Shira $3,000
Benjamin $2,400

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: 4-Letter World Cities; Hard Stuff; Women In The Bible; Music Of The ’60s; Literary Terms; Double “R” Words)

Double Jeopardy opened with Benjamin doubling up through DD2, and then a very long while before DD3 came out. Shira made a conservative bet that looked like it aimed to keep her in contention regardless going into Final, but an incorrect response and some correct responses on the last four clues from Adriana were enough to give Adriana another runaway going into Final Jeopardy.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Adriana 26 correct 3 incorrect
Shira 13 correct 3 incorrect
Benjamin 11 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 18 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Adriana $18,800
Shira $8,900
Benjamin $8,000

Adriana was the only player correct in Final, putting a punctuation mark on win #7; she’ll go for #8 tomorrow!

Tonight’s results:

Benjamin $8,000 – $901 = $7,099 (What is …?)
Shira $8,900 – $2,900 = $6,000 (What is drinking alcohol?)
Adriana $18,800 + $800 = $19,600 (What is teaching evolution?) (7-day total: $155,700)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Theres’s a big difference between “playing to win” and “playing not to lose”; because second/third place is a more difficult betting scenario, it’s so much more important to be playing from the lead. Give your opponents the tougher betting scenario!
  • To give a concrete example from today’s game: I would have gone nearly all in from Shira’s position on DD3, for two reasons: one, if I’m correct, I’m now leading going into Final Jeopardy; two, if I’m not, I’ve become memorable in the eyes of the fans and the producers—and it means that I’m probably returning for Second Chance next winter.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Adriana $18,800 Shira $8,900 Benjamin $8,000)

Adriana: Bet no more tha $999. (Actual bet: $800)

Benjamin: I would bet somewhere close to $6,200 here; it should still win if Shira makes a cover bet and is incorrect, and defends against a lot of random numbers she might choose to bet as well. (Actual bet: $901)

Shira: Standard cover bet over Benjamin is $7,101. However, because Adriana’s runaway margin is so small, you might as well go all in here—just in case she makes a math error. (Actual bet: $2,900)

16 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, June 6, 2024"

  1. Having seen “Inherit the Wind,” I got this immediately, although I didn’t realize that the actual law being violated was the Butler Act. Not sure this extra bit of information would actually help anyone.

  2. Kurt Scherer | June 6, 2024 at 9:35 am |

I did not recognize “Butler Act”, but Tennessee and 1925 made it easy for me. I also learned that the law was not repealed until 1967.

  3. Katerina E. | June 6, 2024 at 11:32 am |

Like the above comments state, the law’s name didn’t register immediately, but the date and the locale did. It’s a shame that the law was in place for 42 years.

  4. Rick Hock | June 6, 2024 at 5:05 pm |

My congrats to Adriana on her 7th win and wish her continued success.

  5. I’ve heard of the Scopes Monkey trial, but I didn’t remember the year nor the state; my arbitrary guess was “flag burning”.

  6. I got this right, having been unable to think of a trial in the South from the 1920s that wasn’t Scopes. The clue was kind of oddly-worded – though I’ve certainly seen way worse – but all the necessary elements were there.

I agree about Shira “playing not to lose” there. I facepalmed when she made such a weak bet, thinking she should’ve bet $10200+ to try to secure the lead (I also got “ellipsis” in time). Getting it right puts me in position to win; getting it wrong or still losing due to a missed FJ, as you said, gives me Second Chance consideration. I’ve stated before that some contestants who took big swings will get that. Shira will not.

  7. Bill Vollmer | June 6, 2024 at 6:50 pm |

I’m surprised nobody commented on the similarities between Benjamin and Buzzy Chohen. They even work in similar fields. Benjamin in Theatre, Buzzy in Muisc.
When Johnny Gilbert announced Shira as being a Rabbi, I had a reaction of “What Would David Small Say?”(For those who don’t recognize the name, lookupthe books by Harry Kemelman.)
Like many here, I didn’t recognize the Tennessee law called the Butler act, either. But also they year of it’s passage, and, state, lead me to think “What is the teaching of (the Theroy of) Evolution?” I’ve seen parts of various productions of “Inherit The Wind” Butthat wasn’t, at least conciously, tomy response.
Anybody know if the Purdue University campus newspaperis giving much coverage to Adrianna’s run?

    • Searching “Harmeyer” at the site of The Exponent, Purdue’s newspaper, yields something attributed to “Staff Reports, but it’s riddled with errors:

      https://www.purdueexponent.org/campus/article_7ae27176-2388-11ef-9b83-7f39ee025d41.html

(Most notably, the writer(s) presume that Adriana would be retired after her fifth game; it also gives the wrong date for that game (Monday, not Tuesday).)

      • Bill Vollmer | June 6, 2024 at 7:37 pm |

I would have hoped that the editors (if not the advisors-if there aresuch a thing for campus news organizations,) wouldhave caught those errorw, if only checking the story against any wire service reports.

        • Bill Vollmer | June 6, 2024 at 7:49 pm |

The West Lafayette “town” newspaper, the Journal and Courier (A Gannett newspaper,) has storiesin it’s archives through Adrianna’s win on Monday, giving her title as a “clinical assistant professor” and “archivest.”

        • Well, that puts to bed any assumption that most college students and professors CURRENTLY watch Jeopardy!

However, reports about so many 4-time winners this year NOT making it to 5, then celebrations when Adriana DID make it to 5, I can a little more see someone maybe subconsciously falling back to thinking that 5 is the goal line limit.

BUT this also means that there are people in America (at least at Purdue) who know little to nothing about Ken Jennings or James Holzhauer!

  8. Rick Hock | June 6, 2024 at 9:14 pm |

Andy! Hello. I just noticed two different values listed for Adriana’s 7 day total – one in the recap and a different one with the picture.

  9. Got Final. Tenn., 1925, and courtroom challenge all pointed me to the correct response.

  10. I didn’t know FJ, but probably should have, since my mom sent me to a Christian school for 4 years and I don’t believe the teaching of evolution was allowed there. 🙁

But wow Adriana the Archivist keeps getting it done! Up to 7 now! Can’t wait to see if she gets #8 tomorrow. 🙂

Jeopardy is on ABC here and we were preempted by the NBA Finals tonight and it was on at 9:30 Pacific. Next week both the NBA Finals and NHL Final will be on ABC and preempting Jeopardy for multiple nights here.

    • I got it immediately, but I had the advantage(?) of living in Tennessee all my life. I cannot remember if I was ever “taught evolution” in [public] school, but that could just be because I always DEVOURED science books almost from the time I learned to read [then science-oriented magazines, too] so I’m sure I knew all about evolution long before the time it was (or should have been) taught in school.

      • Woot woot Lisa! 🙂 Sounds like you had much more than just the “advantage ?” of living in Tennessee. Have a great weekend!
