Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category World Travel) for Tuesday, July 30, 2024 (Season 40, Game 124):
The name of this service that began Nov. 14, 1994 echoes the Étoile du Nord, which linked Paris, Brussels & Amsterdam from 1927
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Juveria Zaheer, a psychiatrist from Whitby, Ontario, Canada![]() |
Kevin Belle, a trail planner from Silver Spring, Maryland![]() |
Luigi de Guzman, an attorney from Arlington, Virginia![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
The encore presentation of the 2024 Tournament of Champions continues today with quarterfinal #5 between Kevin Belle, Juveria Zaheer, and Luigi de Guzman. Juveria was coming into this ToC on a roll, thanks to dominant play in the earlier Second Chance Competition as well as Champions Wildcard. However, Luigi de Guzman was a very strong five-time champion. Most fans were expecting fireworks in this quarterfinal.

Correct response: What is Eurostar?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Eurostar is a major passenger rail service in Western Europe, connecting the UK, France, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. When service began in 1994, it connected Waterloo International station in London with Paris-Nord and Brussels-South rail stations (however, the service moved in 2007 to St Pancras in London). The service uses France’s high-speed TGV technology and was conceived to provide high-speed passenger rail service between Britain and mainland Europe via the Channel Tunnel. It usually takes about two and a half hours to get between London and Paris.
This is another Final that I’m a fan of; if you can translate “etoile” to “star”, and are familiar with Eurostar, both players in studio and viewers at home should hopefully be able to get to this one within thirty seconds.

Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: Around The World; An Onomatopoeia Romance; Detective Fiction; Live, Laugh, Love; Colors Of The Rainbow; Name, Image, Likeness)
It was Juveria who got off to the hottest start in this one, picking up six of the first seven correct responses, getting the Daily Double correct, and had $8,000 before Luigi and Kevin were even able to speak. While Luigi and Kevin got in over the back half of the opening segment, Juveria had a big lead after 15 clues.
Statistics at the first break (15 clues):
Juveria 7 correct 0 incorrect
Luigi 3 correct 1 incorrect
Kevin 2 correct 0 incorrect
Today’s interviews:
Juveria isn’t used to playing Cinderella at 41.
Kevin has won a drag pageant since he was last on the show.
Luigi thinks that the quickest way to make a lot of smart friends is to get on the show.
Things continued similarly in the second half of the opening round, with Juveria picking up another 8 correct to stay well in the lead.
Statistics after the Jeopardy round:
Juveria 15 correct 1 incorrect
Kevin 6 correct 1 incorrect
Luigi 4 correct 3 incorrect
Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:
Juveria $11,400
Kevin $2,200
Luigi $1,600
Double Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: It’s A Party!; Compound Words; Sci. Abbr.; Name; Image; “Like”ness)
We all knew Juveria didn’t have this locked up after just 30 clues, and Luigi found both Daily Doubles in this round. He doubled up on both of them to jump into a slim lead! From there, a great battle commenced, with Juveria doing just enough to have a $1,400 lead going into Final Jeopardy.
Statistics after Double Jeopardy:
Juveria 26 correct 2 incorrect
Luigi 17 correct 6 incorrect
Kevin 10 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).
Scores going into Final:
Juveria $23,400
Luigi $22,000
Kevin $5,800
Kevin did not get Final. Luigi did, which put the pressure on Juveria. Unfortunately, Juveria did not—which makes Luigi a semifinalist! Hearts broke across Canada back in Feburary when this game aired.
Tonight’s results:
Kevin $5,800 – $0 = $5,800 (What is Eurail?)
Luigi $22,000 + $21,999 = $43,999 (What is Eurostar?) (Semi-Finalist)
Juveria $23,400 – $21,000 = $2,400 (What is the chunnel?)
Other Miscellaneous Game Statistics:

As much as this one hurts my heart to watch, I did get this rather quickly, mainly because I spent more time than I care to admit (after the initial airing) thinking about how far Juveria could’ve gone in the tournament had she written Eurostar instead. My guess was at least to the finals.
On the other hand, any sadness I feel about today’s result is offset by reminding myself of what Juveria had to do to get here. She’s still a legend to me and so many others – not to mention, one of the kindest people to have ever been on the show – and one game where Final Jeopardy didn’t quite go her way will not change that.
