Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Tech Talk) for Thursday, July 4, 2024 (Season 40, Game 214):

In 1992 Jean Polly told new Web users to do this & later explained they “need some skill…never know if there are going to be sharks”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Josh Martin, a corporate pilot from Springfield, Missouri
Josh Martin on Jeopardy!
Christine Roberts, a digital marketing coordinator originally from Holland, Pennsylvania
Christine Roberts on Jeopardy!
Isaac Hirsch, a customer support team lead from Burbank, California (1-day total: $19,185)
Isaac Hirsch on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Isaac Hirsch enters this Fourth of July as a defending 1-day champion, picking up just shy of $20,000 in victory yesterday. Today, he faces off against Christine Roberts and Josh Martin.

“Today I’ll travel to Minnesota, Texas, California, Cleveland, New Zealand, Sweden and England. I’m not frantically packing, and I won’t pick up any frequent flyer mileage. In fact, I’m sipping cocoa at my Macintosh. My trips will be electronic, using the computer at my desk, communications software, a modem, and a standard phone line.” That is the opening paragraph of Jean Polly’s Surfing the Internet, her 1992 primer to the Internet.

For being a librarian who was one of the first to champion and extol the virtues of the Internet, and what was available there, Polly was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2019.

Game Recap & Tonight’s Game Stats:

Looking to find out who won Jeopardy! today? Here’s the Thursday, July 4, 2024 Jeopardy! by the numbers, along with a recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: History, American Style; Same Role In The Franchise; Words With Silent Consonants; Hit The Grid-Y; Game-Pourri; Play Time)

There was only one incorrect response in the first segment; unfortunately, it was a True Daily Double that Isaac attempted. After 15 clues, Josh led with $2,800 to Christine’s $2,000 and Isaac’s $800.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Josh 4 correct 0 incorrect
Christine 2 correct 0 incorrect
Isaac 7 correct 1 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Josh flies his children for their birthday.
Christine is studying Basque.
Isaac was elected Homecoming King as a high school senior.

Isaac had a strong second half of the round, picking up another 7 correct to come within $800 of Josh’s lead.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Josh 8 correct 0 incorrect
Isaac 14 correct 2 incorrect
Christine 2 correct 0 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Josh $4,200
Isaac $3,400
Christine $2,000

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: See You In The Funny Papyrus; 3 E’s Only; Pacific Islands; Latin Music; Known By Their Initials; Well, We’ve Never Had That Response)

Isaac got to DD2 early, but gave Josh a brief opening—and Josh nearly doubled up through DD3. Thus, despite getting half of the responses correct, Josh is within two-thirds of Isaac going into Final Jeopardy.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Isaac 30 correct 4 incorrect
Josh 14 correct 0 incorrect
Christine 7 correct 0 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 20 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Isaac $21,200
Josh $14,400
Christine $6,400

Both Josh and Isaac were correct—with “surf the Web”, which is fine with me—and Isaac is a 2-day champion!

Tonight’s results:

Christine $6,400 – $2,000 = $4,400 (What thanks!)
Josh $14,400 + $799 = $15,199 (What is surf the web?)
Isaac $21,200 + $7,601 = $28,801 (What is surf the web?) (2-day total: $47,986)

Isaac Hirsch, today's Jeopardy! winner (for the July 4, 2024 game.)

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Isaac $21,200 Josh $14,400 Christine $6,400)

Isaac: Standard cover bet over Josh is $7,601. (Actual bet: $7,601)

Christine: Bet whatever you like; however, your chances of winning might be helped by a big bet, because Isaac doesn’t have that much of an overbet cushion. (Actual bet: $2,000)

Josh: Bet no more than $799 and you take victory if Isaac misses Final. (Actual bet: $799)

I wonder how strict they’ll be on exact wording with this today? I feel a lot of ppl can parse the clue to use various forms of the saying “surf the internet” or “surf the web” but if since the writers seem to be looking for this specific reference I would assume they won’t get credit if they don’t use the exact “surfing the internet.”

    • You’ll note that “web” is in the clue itself—ostensibly this would point players in the right direction.

      • One would have to decide between that interpretation or the interpretation that it signals NOT to use the word already in the clue (which had been my thought), but I was glad to see that all variations were acceptable!

        • Robert. J. Fawkes | July 4, 2024 at 7:28 pm |

I’m with Lisa. Because “Web” was in the clue, I chose “Surf the Internet.” It seems more likely that you shouldn’t use a word that was in the clue.

  2. Honestly, how many people are going to remember that specific article? Some players might stumble across the right answer because of the pun but I’d be surprised if all three get it.

  3. I guessed it would have something to do with phishing, but guessing phishing came much later.

I was at a friends’ house way back in 1993. He gave me, and others, a demonstration on how he began surfing the net. So he dialed in to the net. It took 15 minutes to get “online” by dial up mode and for his computer to “boot up”. This was 31 years ago!! “Surfing the internet” takes a lot less time to set up these days.

    • Yes, the surfing has gotten much easier since then. I had a buddy in 1985 that had a Commodore 64 and had the setup that Matthew Broderick had in the movie War Games and was playing a tournament like game that was totally DOS based, but it was fun as hell watching him play. That felt like that earliest stage of the internet to me.

  5. I guessed “what is surf.” I wonder if that would be enough.

    • Thomas G. | July 5, 2024 at 12:00 am |

“What is Surf” would probably make you lose money, if not the game. This brings the question, ‘Surf what?’ Surfing the ocean waves? Etc. Just thought I’d bring this up.

    • I agree with Thomas G., especially since (even then) the internet was being used to provide advice and instruction (thus the clue COULD have been about actual ocean surfing or even wind surfing if that was being done yet — I think it was).

However, if you had been a contestant onstage, after quickly thinking “what is surf”, with money on the line, I bet you yourself would have reviewed the clue and decided you needed to add “the web” or “the internet” at the end of your response.

I certainly knew of the term that was the correct response for today’s Final Jeopardy, (who dosn’t?) But until today, never knew where the phrase came from. Obviously a another loss for me. Since it has been assumed that Roxie wasn’t enough to be considered correct on the Final Jeopardy about the Broadway/movie musical “Chicago” only one right, so far this week.

    • I didn’t know the origin either, but upon looking for where Jean Polly was [state/organization], I found that there had been a “paper published”(?) — sort of like an ARPANET newsletter — using that phrase about 5 months before her usage. However, the circumstances of the two make it extremely unlikely that she had seen it and she definitely went much much further in establishing it as “what we call this activity”.

      • And to think that the ARPANET got its start in 1969. It’s come quite a ways since then.

  7. I got Final. It seemed straightforward, especially since both “Web” and “Internet” were acceptable (I guessed “Web”). Isaac is looking very strong.

  8. I immediately blurted out “what is surf the web?” It was one of those what else could be thoughts for me, but as the seconds counted down, I was hoping that I didn’t miss something. I stayed with my immediate blurt and was happy to see it was right.

Strong game tonight by all 3 players and retro congrats to Isaac on win #2 and the winners of 1 at 3 days.

Have a great Friday everyone! 🙂
