Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, August 1, 2024

Note: This page contains spoilers for the August 1, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please also note that today’s game is an encore presentation of the game that originally aired on March 4, 2024.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Poets of Ancient Rome) for Thursday, August 1, 2024 (Season 40, Game 126):

Far from Rome, this first century poet wrote, “The leader’s anger done, grant me the right to die in my native country”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Ike Barinholtz, a producer, writer & actor from Chicago, Illinois
Ike Barinholtz on Jeopardy!
Melissa Klapper, a professor from Merion Station, Pennsylvania
Melissa Klapper on Jeopardy!
Ray Lalonde, a scenic artist from Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Ray Lalonde on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The encore presentations of the 31st Tournament of Champions continues today with quarterfinal #7, this one between superchampion Ray Lalonde, 3-day champion Melissa Klapper, and Celebrity Jeopardy winner Ike Barinholtz.

If I was to ever write a book titled The Games That Changed Jeopardy!, the game rerunning today would 100% be included in this one; Ike was generally viewed as a significant underdog going into the event.

Correct response: Who was Ovid?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Early in the first century AD, the famous Roman poet Ovid was banished to the Black Sea port of Tomis (current-day Constanța, Romania), likely for falling politically afoul of Augustus Caesar, though his Ars Amatoria is often blamed.

Ovid’s sadness at his exile out to the extreme reaches of the Roman Empire, especially to a place where nobody spoke Latin, was outlined in his works Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto. Ovid was not granted the right he wished in the quote in today’s clue; he died in Tomis c.17 AD.

This should be a relatively straightforward Final Jeopardy, as long as players don’t overthink it. Essentially, “name a Roman poet from the time frame” will hopefully be enough to get many to the correct response here.

My lack of knowledge of Roman poets helped on this FJ – I could only name one.

    • Yeah, there’s only 2 I can think of that they would ask about, Ovid and Vergil.
Maybe Horace in a tough bottom category DJ clue but he’s somewhat obscure for general knowledge.

  2. I do not remember how I remembered this one, but I managed to get to Ovid extremely quickly. My postseason streak is still alive!

If anything, considering they probably have similar knowledge bases, this quarterfinal serves as a showcase of what Lisa Ann Walter will have to do to be competitive in the 2025 ToC. You could clearly see something shift in Ike’s mindset when he got to the Celebrity finals, knowing he had to be aggressive, and that aggressiveness got him not just to this ToC, but past the first round, and against a giant like Ray Lalonde to boot. Ike is clearly willing to go big whenever he needs to (as well as once when he, erm… didn’t need to), and while I absolutely think Lisa Ann is good enough to hold her own in her ToC, for her to come out on top may require the change in mindset that Ike took such brilliant (and fun to watch) advantage of.
