Note: This page contains spoilers for the August 13, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please also note that today’s game is an encore presentation of the game that originally aired on March 14, 2024.
Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The United Nations) for Tuesday, August 13, 2024 (Season 40, Game 134):
Of the 9 countries that have produced a U.N. Secretary-General, this nation is the only one from its hemisphere
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Ben Chan, a philosophy professor from Green Bay, Wisconsin![]() |
Troy Meyer, a music executive from Tampa, Florida![]() |
Yogesh Raut, a social and personality psychologist from Vancouver, Washington![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Tonight’s encore presentation is Game 3 of the 31st Tournament of Champions final; entering this one, Troy Meyer was coming off a stunning True Daily Double bet of over $20,000, while Ben Chan had taken Game 1. Only Yogesh Raut had yet to win.
Interestingly, when these games originally aired in March, I had started to suspect that Yogesh had made a comeback in this event when he made a point of mentioning that I had pegged his tournament win chances at 11.080%. In all honesty, it’s not easy to make a comeback when you have to win 3 times and your opponents only have to win two!
This was also the game in which the only non-Daily Double clue not responded to correctly was a clue about a Taylor Swift song. It went about as viral back in March as I thought it would.
I have an occasional mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

Nine countries have produced a U.N. Secretary-General: Norway (Trygve Lie), Sweden (Dag Hammarskjöld), Myanmar (U Thant), Austria (Kurt Waldheim), Peru (Javier Pérez de Cuéllar), Egypt (Boutros Boutros-Ghali), Ghana (Kofi Annan), South Korea (Ban Ki-Moon), and Portugal (António Guterres). Of those nine, eight are in the Northern Hemisphere; the ninth, Peru, is in the Southern Hemisphere.
Back in March, I said that “the list of U.N. Secretaries-General is short enough that any serious quizzer from high school onwards should have the list memorized, so this should be relatively straightforward for a Tournament of Champions finals situation.” I was definitely correct; this did play straightforwardly for our three players in this one.

I don’t see many other people do this, so I will – considering that some stretches haven’t been the best before, the writers absolutely cooked with the Final Jeopardy clues all tournament long. With maybe two exceptions, all of them were the absolute perfect difficulty for ToC contestants, but also not so difficult that the average watcher stands no chance of getting them. And no matter what outcome, the audience – including me – is always able to learn something new! 😀
