Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, August 12, 2024

Note: This page contains spoilers for the August 12, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please also note that today’s game is an encore presentation of the game that originally aired on March 13, 2024.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Books of the Bible) for Monday, August 12, 2024 (Season 40, Game 133):

This book is named for a tribe of Israel that carried out judgment of the idolaters of the golden calf

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Ben Chan, a philosophy professor from Green Bay, Wisconsin
Ben Chan on Jeopardy!
Troy Meyer, a music executive from Tampa, Florida
Troy Meyer on Jeopardy!
Yogesh Raut, a social and personality psychologist from Vancouver, Washington
Yogesh Raut on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

As we pass the one-third point of the summer break and get closer to the midway point, the Encore Presentations continue of the 31st Tournament of Champions. Today is Game 2 of the Tournament of Champions final between Yogesh Raut, Troy Meyer, and Ben Chan. Ben enters the game with a 1-game lead after Yogesh Raut’s too-conservative bet in Final Jeopardy in Game 1 of the final.

Correct response: What is Leviticus?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

In the book of Exodus in the Old Testament, the golden calf was a cult image constructed by the Israelites when Moses was on Mount Sinai. According to the Bible, the tribe of Levi was the only tribe who did not worship the golden calf; thus, they were the ones to carry out the judgement of the idolators. Later, the book of Leviticus in the Bible was named after the tribe.

I almost feel as though the show, in going back to a Bible category in the Tournament of Champions final, is tempting God (if you’ll pardon the reference) after the Hebrews debacle of Game 3 of the 30th Tournament of Champions final. Though, I will say, there’s likely much less doubt here as to the veracity of this clue.

Back in March, I predicted that the players would go at least 2-for-3 on this Final. As it turns out, I was correct.

  1. I’m running out of ways to say I got this quickly, huh?

What an incredible game. Kudos to Troy for being so willing to go for that massive $21K+ True Daily Double – I know of very few players (other than the Masters) who would have the guts to go for that.

I actually recorded the clip with my phone (pointed at my TV screen, don’t worry) when this game aired initially, and I watch it whenever I need motivation or confidence – because if Troy can successfully pull off the third-largest Daily Double wager of all time without even blinking, then I can probably accomplish whatever it is that scares me to do. 🙂

    Final Jeopardy Postseason Record: 10R – 1W

    • Note for Andy: I said third-largest and not fourth-largest because I am choosing to treat the two $25,000 bets that James Holzhauer made as one. Treating identical bets as one, and taking away the currency difference, the top 5 looks like this to me –

      1) James Holzhauer (25,600)
      2) James Holzhauer (25,000)
      3) Troy Meyer (21,800)
      4) Victoria Groce (20,800)
      5) James Holzhauer (20,200)

I understand and respect the approach you take in regards to this; I’m just doing it in the way that makes the most sense to me personally.

      • I’d have to side with Andy on this one. If two people tie for the gold medal with exact scores, do you think the next person in line should get a silver (and not the bronze) because there is only one ‘score’ better than them?

      • I tend to agree with you when two identical entries are by the same person. He could have one-upped himself if he had wanted to (and in fact did with that $25,600 bet, which MIGHT have been earlier than either $25,500 bet but I doubt it). However, my main thought is that the best comparison should be between the percentage of their current total for each wagerer rather than exact amount.
