Note: This page contains spoilers for the August 28, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please also note that today’s game is an encore presentation of the game that originally aired on March 29, 2024.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category U.S.S.R.I.P.) for Wednesday, August 28, 2024 (Season 40, Game 145):

Of the 15 countries formed by the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, this one is alphabetically last

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Ben Ingram, a business control specialist originally from Florence, South Carolina
Ben Ingram on Jeopardy!
Dhruv Gaur, a grad student from Cambridge, Massachusetts
Dhruv Gaur on Jeopardy!
Victoria Groce, a writer & television personality from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Victoria Groce on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today’s encore presentation is the 8th of 9 quarterfinals from the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament, with this game featuring Victoria Groce’s return to the show. “The Queen” from The Chase faced off against 2014 Tournament of Champions victor Ben Ingram and recent College champion Dhruv Gaur. Looking back at this game from what we know now in terms of what has happened in the Jeopiverse since, Dhruv’s performance in this match is actually quite impressive in terms of how well he played against arguably the world’s #1 quizzer and a former ToC winner.

The list of internationally recognized post-Soviet states, which currently number 15, are, in alphabetical order: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

I think that as long as our players remember Uzbekistan, this should be a relatively straightforward clue to get a correct response to within 30 seconds.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Ben Ingram’s Final Jeopardy bet of $1,854 was a nod to his alma mater of Wofford College in South Carolina, which was founded in 1854.
  • As I mentioned back in March: While it did not make a difference to today’s result, the money left on the table by Dhruv on the first Daily Double was the difference between him being within 63% of Victoria’s score and him being within 75% of Victoria’s score going into Final Jeopardy. That is a big change in win chances!
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Victoria $22,800 Dhruv $14,400 Ben $5,800)

Victoria: Standard cover bet over Dhruv is $6,001. (Actual bet: $6,001)

Dhruv: You have to bet at least $2,400 to have any chance of winning. Because there’s no difference between second and third, you might as well go all in. If this was regular play, though, I’d suggest a bet between $2,400 and $2,799. (Actual bet: $8,401)

Ben: You can’t win unless Victoria overbets. Bet whatever you like. (Actual bet: $1,854)

  1. Back on track after a miss yesterday. I wish I had something more interesting to say, but I don’t.

Would it be controversial to say that Victoria is pretty good at this whole trivia thing? 😉

    Final Jeopardy Postseason Record: 21R – 2W

  2. Thinking back to how much I enjoyed seeing Victoria for the first time and how annoyed I was when Ken said ‘JIT’ over and over…
