Warning: This page contains spoilers for the September 18, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The Movies) for Wednesday, September 18, 2024 (Season 41, Game 8):

Hewlett-Packard’s first big customer was Walt Disney, who purchased special sound equipment for the making & showing of this film

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Sam Neuman, a global communications specialist from New York, New York
Sam Neuman on Jeopardy!
Chris Lindsay, an attorney from Carmel, California
Chris Lindsay on Jeopardy!
Aiden Orzech, a teacher from Thornhill, Ontario, Canada (2-day total: $49,599)
Aiden Orzech on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Canadian Aiden Orzech is now a 2-day champion as he faces off against Chris Lindsay and Sam Neuman. His winnings so far translate out to about $67,400 Canadian; while many viewers believe that this total is also completely devoid of taxation due to Aiden’s nationality (as winnings such as this are classified differently in Canada compared to the United States), this is not entirely the case—certainly, California gets its cut because the money was earned there. Aiden faces off today against Carmel attorney Chris Lindsay and New York’s Sam Neuman.

In the late 1930s, Stanford electrical engineering graduates Bill Hewlett and David Packard realized that a pilot light and negative feedback loop could be used to significantly improve audio oscillators currently on the market, both in stability and price (HP’s oscillators could be sold for under $100 when competitors could only sell theirs for $200). This allowed the Walt Disney Company—who were searching for a reliable way to test their Fantasound system that they were creating for their 1940 musical extravaganza Fantasia—to purchase the reliable testing equipment they needed. From this, HP became regarded as the symbolic founder of Silicon Valley, one of the world’s major areas for tech companies.

This should be a relatively straightforward clue for anyone who knows that HP dates to the late 1930s and knows that Fantasia is a better answer to this clue than Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Chris: Standard cover bet over Aiden is $4,601. (Actual bet: $5,800)

Sam: Standard cover bet over Chris is $1,401. (Actual bet: $1,420)

11 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, September 18, 2024"

  1. I guessed “Sleeping Beauty” (1959), because I recall some hype at the time about it being the first Disney film to feature stereophonic sound.

  2. Figured it was something from long ago that had lots of music. I went with “Song of the South”. Well, today I score Zip (a-dee-doo-dah).

  3. The only thing I could think of was Wall-E.

  4. I got it right. I had not been sure that Hewlett-Packard went back as far as Fantasia (which I was not even positive went back as far as I thought it did), but I thought Fantasia otherwise fit too perfectly to ignore (especially since I had no other stand-out alternate choice). [And my thinking took me only a few seconds even though it may sound like I took longer than that.]

    • Similar here. If I had to guess, I would’ve said HP was founded in the 60s, but couldn’t think of another movie that made sense.

      • Had it been any other context, I would have thought that, too, but knowing that IBM dated back to the 19-teens and NCR dated back before 1900, it didn’t seem unlikely that HP could date back far enough to coincide with Fantasia.

    • Way to go! 🙂

  5. I second guessed myself into giving a wrong response. I initially said “What is Fantasia?” reasoning what Disney “big budget” movie might need specialized electronic equipement. Then, thinking of all the computer generateed effects, went with Tron. Of course when Ken acknowledged the correct response, I, figuratively, of course, kicked myself.
Andy’s explanation that the big purchase was an improved Oscilascope, used to check the specialized sound created for Fantasia, was interesting.

  6. I went with The Black Hole reasoning that Hewlett-Packard might have been good for that time frame. Now 2 for 8 to start the season.
