Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category New York Movies) for Thursday, September 19, 2024 (Season 41, Game 9):
Frank Sinatra got upset that a photo of him caught fire in a Brooklyn pizzeria in this film
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Fr. Steve Jakubowski, a Catholic priest originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan![]() |
Jen Feldman, a high school teacher from Brooklyn, New York![]() |
Chris Lindsay, an attorney from Carmel, California (1-day total: $11,600)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Chris Lindsay is your new Jeopardy champion after his come-from-behind victory in last night’s game. Today, he faces off against New York teacher Jen Feldman and Father Steve Jakubowski, who I believe is only the second player to be introduced with the title Father on the show—and the first since Father Greg Coiro all the way back in November 1984.

In the 1989 film Do The Right Thing, Spike Lee included a scene where Sal’s Pizzeria in Brooklyn burned down because there were customers upset at Sal the proprietor. Sinatra, whose picture was on that wall in the scene, was offended at the fact that Lee had chosen to burn the photograph of Sinatra, and rebuffed Lee a few years later when Lee was looking to talk to Sinatra during the production of Lee’s Jungle Fever.
Spike Lee recounted the story of how he found out that the Chairman of the Board was mad at him at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
As far as movie-related Final Jeopardy clues go, I think that this is an excellent one that certainly has the potential to teach many viewers something that they may or may not have known about Sinatra.

Jen may have correctly guessed Chris would wager small (enough for Chris to cover third place), but she didn’t wager to win a double stumper with him. Seems her wager was more in line with forcing third place to correct if she wasn’t. As for the clue, I guessed The Towering Inferno because I had no clue, and pretty sure that movie had a fire.
With a title like that, I’d be shocked if there wasn’t a fire!
Oh there was most definitely a fire! In a big tall building in San Francisco. It and Earthquake were disaster films from the mid-1970’s. Earthquake hits too close to home, as it destroys my city of Los Angeles.
Because we’ve only seen 10 correct responses on Daily Doubles out of the 27 this season, I decided to look at the first two weeks of every modern season (modern in this case = post-doubling of dollar values) to compare the Daily Double record in those seasons to this one…
And long story short, this is going to be the first season in over 20 years, if not ever, to have more Daily Doubles answered incorrectly than correctly in the first two weeks. Even if the players tomorrow sweep all three DDs, it’ll still only bring the rate up to 13/30, or 43.3% – by far the lowest % in the modern era.
Some more numbers from my findings…
Season 19, shockingly, had the highest rate of DD conversion in the first two weeks (25/30, or 83.3%).
Seasons 22, 27, 36, and 38 are all tied at 23 Daily Doubles correct, partly due to the champions in at least the first week (David Madden, Roger Craig, Jason Zuffranieri, and Matt Amodio, respectively). Of these, Season 27 had the highest conversion rate (79.3%) because it was the only one of the four to have a Daily Double be unplayed.
On the flip side, Season 26 had the least correct Daily Doubles, with just fifteen; the only reason that isn’t the lowest % is because only 27 Daily Doubles were played in the first two weeks, marking a conversion rate of 55.6%.
What is the lowest %? Seasons 20, 24, 29, and 37 all had just 16 correct responses; however, by virtue of it being the only season to NOT have an unplayed Daily Double, Season 24 takes the crown, with an anemic 53.3% conversion rate. Seasons 20, 29, and 37 are in a three-way tie for second, with 16/29 (55.2%).
The first two weeks of regular play of Season 40 produced a joint-third-highest get rate of 23/30 (76.7%), while the first two weeks of Season 40 produced a get rate of 63.3%.
Nearly half of the correct Daily Doubles in the first two regular-play weeks of Season 40 were courtesy of Alison Betts… or, as I like to call her, Miss Daily Double Magnet. (All in good fun, of course!)
Shockingly, the first two weeks of Season 21 produced a get rate of “just” 21/30, or 70%. I say “shockingly” because, well, Ken Jennings.
I will see all of you with potentially more useless numbers tomorrow! 🙂
Note to self:
Do not try to make bulleted lists in comments.
They will not work.
I only wish you had broken it down by dollar value on the board where the DD was found 🙂
That seems dumb on Sinatra’s part, since showing that the picture burned would more likely intend to indicate the reverence in which it was held by the owners and patrons [i.e., implying their upset at seeing it burn] than showing lack of respect for him [which ignoring the picture would imply].
Semi-rhetorically: I wonder what will happen if every (newly-minted) M.D. or Ph.D. now asks to be called “Doctor”.
Because “Do The Right Thing” is one of my favorite movies, and one that I try to watch at least once a year, this one was a simple get for me.
Where did they get ‘an idle brain is the devil’s workshop”? I thought it was idle hands.
Searching for the phrase with your favorite internet search engine is likely to yield an acceptable answer.
Watched all of Jeopardy tonight, only for my TV to time out just as Ken was about to read the FJ clue. Noooooooo!!!!! I got it to come back on just as they were revealing the answers from the players. Coming here just now, I see that I would have had no clue.
0 for 4 for the week and 2 for 9 for Season 41. Hopefully I can end the week with a win like I did last Friday! Have a great Friday everyone! I liked all the DD stats MasterDoge!
When today’s Final Jeopardy was shown, somehow by brain just clicked on (Spike Lee’s) Do The Right Thing. But, I don’t recall ever watching ANY of Spike Lee’s films. Yet somehow “a fire at a Brooklyn pizza shop” took me right there. So, with that I’m .500 for the week.
