Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

As we move just one week away from the start of Season 41, our last week of Season 40’s encore presentations is the final five episodes of the Jeopardy Invitational Tournament. Today’s semifinal features Sam Kavanaugh, Larissa Kelly, and Andrew He—and, much like many of the games in this tournament so far, the game came down to the Daily Doubles.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Two of the three works that Coriolis is best known for today were published in 1835: Théorie Mathématique des Effets du Jeu de Billiard (the billiard ball physics treatise mentioned in the clue) and Sur les équations du mouvement relatif des systèmes de corps, a treatise on the transfer of energy in rotating systems. While Coriolis’s treatise had to do with water wheels, it was later realized that this would work on a significantly larger scale: specifically, the Earth. Later, the Coriolis force became often used in meteorology to explain cyclones and the movement of weather patterns.

Unfortunately, the most common reference to the Coriolis effect that most people know is generally false: no, water does not swirl into drains in different directions based on what hemisphere you are located in.

4 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, September 2, 2024"

  1. I remember watching a video from a large science YouTuber about what would happen if the Earth was hollow, and a main part of that discussion was why the Coriolis effect would stop you jumping through the Earth if there was a long shaft from one side of the world to the other. Always nice when something like that helps out for Jeopardy!

I wonder if Andrew and Amy are tired of having to play each other yet 🙂

  2. Why isn’t “newton” a correct answer for Final Jeopardy tonight, sept. 2? He has a force named after him too.

    • Because Newton didn’t publish an 1835 treatise on the physics of billiard balls?

      • Indubitably. But also Newton doesn’t have “a force” (i.e., a specific kind of force like the Coriolis force) named after him, but rather a MEASUREMENT of force is named after Newton. [Though gravity, tension, friction, etc. are “Newtonian forces”, I would not consider any of them a force “named for Newton”.]
