Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, September 23, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the September 23, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 19th Century Americans) for Monday, September 23, 2024 (Season 41, Game 11):

Among those who attended his 1864 funeral were Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson Alcott & Franklin Pierce

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Dana Schwartz, a writer from Los Angeles, California
Dana Schwartz on Jeopardy!
David Erb, a puzzle designer from Seattle, Washington
David Erb on Jeopardy!
Jen Feldman, a high school teacher from Brooklyn, New York (2-day total: $27,850)
Jen Feldman on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Week 3 of the Jeopardy season begins tonight with 2-day champion Jen Feldman taking on Seattle puzzle designer David Erb and Los Angeles writer Dana Schwartz. Not only is this a new week on the show, this was also the beginning of a fresh taping week—which quite possibly means that none of our players knew of Jen’s propensity to not make cover bets in Final Jeopardy. This actually might work to Jen’s advantage if she’s in the right situation today.

I do want to quickly comment on the fact that no editorial was published this weekend; I expect that one will be released midweek to make up for it.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

A few days after his death in May 1864, a number of American luminaries were in Concord, Massachusetts to mourn the passing of Nathaniel Hawthorne, writer of works such as The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables. Those luminaries also included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Interestingly, Emerson wrote words of regret in his diary following the service; he was regretful that he was not closer friends with his fellow American writer.

To me, the inclusion of former President Pierce in the clue is the important name here; Pierce and Hawthorne were close friends from Bowdoin College in Maine and remained close friends for over four decades. (Certainly, the friendship of the two has been mentioned previously on this site, back in early pandemic times.)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I would like to say two things: firstly, Ken’s opening statement is written by the producers, generally Sarah. What I am about say is 100% not Ken’s fault. Secondly, I think that the statement made at the start of the show saying that Jen made an “unorthodox wager” on Friday was completely out-of-pocket and inappropriate for the show to make at the start of a new week of shows, as it actually takes away one of the major advantages of having not made a cover wager on Friday—tipping off this week’s players, saying that an unorthodox wager was made, effectively removes the ability for a player to successfully do it again in the new week. Thankfully, David very much made this a moot point.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: David $30,000 Jen $8,800 Dana $6,400)

Jen: Standard cover bet over Dana is $4,001. (Actual bet: $4,001)

David: Bet no more than $12,399 and enjoy your win. (Actual bet: $12,345)

Dana: In the battle for second, you have two choices here: either less than $1,600 if you think Jen will cover, or all in if you think she won’t. (Actual bet: $5,000)

12 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, September 23, 2024"

  1. I went with Henry David Thoreau. Turns out he passed two years earlier.

    • So did I. The list of of those attending the funeral from the Final Jeopardy “answer” clue, lead me to thinking it was a poet the “answer” clue was looking for. It was near the ned of the playing of Think that I even came up with the name Thoreau, but couldn’t remember how to spell it. Of course, since Thoreau wasn’t the correct response, didn’t manner anyway.

      • Thoreau was actually my first thought and I would not have been surprised if it had turned out to be him, but he just seemed too low-key so I tried to come up with another possibility.

  2. Being unaware of the Hawthorne-Pierce connection, I guessed Longfellow, who died in 1882. Not surprised that this was a triple stumper. I was surprised that David bet anything at all in Final Jeopardy, since he didn’t have to.

    • I also guessed Longfellow, but I was guessing from an even more ignorant position as I thought the right response might be the author of ‘The House of the Seven Gables’, but for some reason I tend to attribute that to Longfellow instead of Hawthorne 😬. [I’m thinking perhaps I get the names ‘Wadsworth’ and ‘Hawthorne’ conflated due to those almost being anagrams, but more likely I just subconsciously feel like ‘The House of the Seven Gables’ would have an author with a more lofty sounding name.]

  3. Three thoughts before I completely crash out. (It’s been a long day.)

    1) I’m absolutely embarrassed to have missed this. Don’t ask me how or why, but “Franklin Pierce” and “1864” led me to think that the funeral was for a Confederate general, so I guessed Stonewall Jackson. I’m gonna go back in my hole now.

    2) Before today’s game, the net earned on Daily Doubles this season came out to about -$13,000 (yes, I really did the math for every game in the last two weeks)… meaning David’s performance today singlehandedly brought the net gain on Daily Doubles for this season to a positive number. Power move, tbh.

    3) I know it doesn’t fit the clue, but if I was up there on stage, I’d be perfectly willing to spend $1,600 on KEY OR PEELE $800 just to say “Who is Sam Buttrey?” 🙂

  4. I said Daniel Webster, recalling his argument in Dartmouth College v. Woodward and that Franklin Pierce is the only U.S. President from New Hampshire.

With the release of today’s Inside Jeopardy! and the information about the upcoming postseason, you’ll have plenty more to react to in that midweek editorial.

  5. Maybe they changed Ken’s opening remarks, but I’m ok with his characterization of Jen’s wager as “unconventional”, but I agree it tips off the new contestants.

  6. If contestants in the middle of a taping day happen to know (some of) the previous wagers of the current champion, hinting at it at the beginning of a day evens up the playing field. I consider the remark perfectly fair.

  7. I bet that David wagered a lot in FJ just because he COULD safely wager $12345 [as I {too?} have “a thing” for number patterns], but I would have just wagered $4,567 or $3,333 or, better yet, $303 so I’d still be getting to take home a lot even if I got FJ wrong.

  8. I, like my fellow Angeleno Dana, went with Douglas. Oops. 0 for my last 6 and 2 for 11 on the season.

Really impressive win by David! See what he does tomorrow!

I went to my 3rd morning taping of Jeopardy today and unlike the other 2 morning tapings, I only saw 2 shows today. Still uber fun! These shows will air on November 4th and 5th. The latter being on Election Day (US) will probably lead to a major pre-emption here in the Los Angeles area.

And a shout out to the real nice lady from Boston that I met today. She’s a great Jeopardy fan! 🙂
