Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, September 20, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the September 20, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Island Chains) for Friday, September 20, 2024 (Season 41, Game 10):

Named for a Spanish queen, this Pacific island chain was a starting point for famous explorations of 1960 & 2012

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Sarah Preisinger, a family law attorney from Bellevue, Nebraska
Sarah Preisinger on Jeopardy!
Santhosh Sastry, an information technology executive from Austin, Texas
Santhosh Sastry on Jeopardy!
Jen Feldman, a high school teacher from Brooklyn, New York (1-day total: $13,800)
Jen Feldman on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Brooklyn teacher Jen Feldman is your new champion after her $4,000 bet in Final Jeopardy last night worked out for her. That should definitely be a consideration on the minds of challengers Santhosh Sastry and Sarah Preisinger going into today’s 61st clue; if I were in second place against Jen at this point, I would be going all-in in Final Jeopardy.

Correct response: What are the Mariana Islands?

Comprised today of a pair of United States territories in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, the Marianas—named after the Spanish queen Mariana of Austria—were the starting point for a pair of notable dives to Challenger Deep, the deepest point in the earth’s seabed. The two dives were undertaken by Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh in 1960 (in the Trieste bathyscape) and film director James Cameron in 2012 in Deepsea Challenger.

Certainly, the realization that the explorations needed to proceed downward and not towards the poles or space would make this a much easier clue, and I think the less intuitive direction of the exploration gives the clue much of this difficulty. I have confidence that at least one player will get to the bottom of this clue, though.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Jen $15,100 Santhosh $9,400 Sarah $7,000)

Jen: Standard cover bet over Santhosh is $3,701. (Actual bet: $1,050)

Santhosh: At minimum, standard cover bet over Sarah is $4,601. However, I think it’s worth going all-in today, because I don’t think you can count on Jen betting to cover—even from this position. (Actual bet: $9,400)

Sarah: You have to bet at least $4,400 to have any chance of winning. (Actual bet: $1,000)

12 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, September 20, 2024"

  1. I got lucky with the FJ! clue in that the Federal agency I was a part of for many years has one of its 120 or so field offices in Guam. While I wasn’t sure that the name of the island group was taken from a Spanish queen, I knew about the nearby “Trench” and figured it was as good a guess as any.

    • I, like two of the contestants, went with Isabella. Not that I know any Isabella Islands, but first Spanish Queen I could come up with. As for Sarah’s wager- I admire all the people who make it on the show, but I would also like them to know as much about wagering strategy as they do about the trivia.

  2. Today was another day when the correct response to Final Jeopaardy just “came” to me.
Post final Jeopardy analysis of why I said “(what are) the Marianas?” made me realize that the Marianas were the only island group I knew of that could fit the Final Jeopardy “answer” clue about being named after a Spanish queen. the Isabellas would have worked, but I’m not aware of any island group iwith that name.
Finished the week 3 for 5. Would have 4 for 5, if I hadn’t second guessed myself on the HP/Disney Final Jeopardy. Still .600 is pretty good.

  3. what is you contact info?

  4. I tried blind guessing as the category was read and said the Aleutian Islands. Then we got the clue and I could only come up with the Galapagos Islands. O for 5 for the week. 2 for 10 on the season.

Hopefully Monday night I can improve on that after Monday Night Football on ABC.

Also, I’ll be going to the morning taping of 2 shows on Monday, so maybe I’ll do well on those FJ’s. 🙂 Last time I was there on December 5, 2023, I hit 2 of 3 FJ’s for shows that aired on January 2 to 4, 2024.

Sadly, as Andy pointed out, Sarah didn’t bet enough to have any chance of winning. Though with Jen’s bet, it became a moot point anyway, as Jen’s bet made it where Sarah didn’t have any chance to win anyway.

Andy or anyone else, do you find any justification at all for Jen to make a wager such as this, where she knows only 1 player can beat her?

Have a great weekend everyone! 🙂

  5. By the way, 8 straight days with “No Runaway.” 2 for 10 Runaway’s on the Season.

  6. What happened with the Hawaiian flower clue? The TV had the pic of the flower but was silent and the answer was never heard at least not on DirecTV, There was a pause and it came back on already into the next question.
