Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, October 23, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the October 23, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The Roman Catholic Church) for Wednesday, October 23, 2024 (Season 41, Game 33):

This day involving the Holy Spirit & the Apostles is sometimes described as the “birthday” of the church

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Brett Kelly, an actor from Surrey, British Columbia, Canada
Brett Kelly on Jeopardy!
Sophia Maymudes, a software engineer from Seattle, Washington
Sophia Maymudes on Jeopardy!
Will Wallace, a game design director from Austin, Texas (1-day total: $18,799)
Will Wallace on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Will Wallace is your new Jeopardy! champion after he was the only player to get Final Jeopardy correct in yesterday’s battle. In his first title defense, he faces off against a couple of West Coasters: Sophia Maymudes from Seattle and Brett Kelly from the Vancouver suburb of Surrey.

It’s been pointed out over the last couple of days that Brett has some movie credits—as someone who generally doesn’t consume a lot of movies, this doesn’t mean a great deal to me personally. But, yes, working actors do get to come on game shows—people who don’t get starring roles in major motion pictures are not exactly wealthy individuals.

Pentecost (celebrated 50 days after Easter) is considered to be the birthday of the Catholic Church because it is said that the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles as the apostles were hiding following Jesus’s resurrection. Having then received the power and the gift of the Holy Spirit, the apostles began preaching and carrying out Jesus’s message.

Even as a writer who generally leans in an agnostic direction when it comes to religion, knowledge of major religious works—especially the Bible—is crucial to having a general understanding of significant portions of Western literature and artwork.

20 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, October 23, 2024"

  1. Judaism already had a day celebrated 50 days after the start of Passover, Shavuot, the day that the Torah was given on Mount Sinai. Coincidence that Catholicism then came up with Pentecost Sunday? Anyway, I missed this one. I guessed the Epiphany, January 6th.

  2. I answered Pentecost before I finished reading the FJ clue. I should think that this is a triple get today.

  3. I will say that the Catholic Church did not begin on this day…the Catholic church actually began in the 3rd or 4th century…Sorry Andy…

    • With all due respect, if the church didn’t exist until 300 years after his pontificate, how is St. Peter the first pope?

      • Hi Andy, the Biblical Christian church began at Pentecost. The Catholic church again did not exist until the 3rd or 4th century. I would get the details and enter the link here…but I may later today. In the meantime, St. Peter is not the ‘first pope’ until the 3rd or 4th century when the Catholic church actually began. If Peter was the first pope, then that would have been mentioned in the Bible by Paul (Saul), or any of the other NT 1st century people.

In the meantime no triple get today. Amazing!!!

    • Christ started his church on Pentecost.

  4. What does “begin” or “exist” mean in the context of the Catholic Church? Not a Church historian here, but if there’s one out there it would be great if they could weigh in. Theologically there’s supposed to be an unbroken line of succession from Christ (when he gave the keys to Peter) through to the current Pope. Well, if you ignore the schism, the Avignon Papacy, dueling or no popes, intervening heresies and the like, etc. So maybe in one sense the church started with Christ himself. But for the first century or so (maybe more) things were evolving and maybe you didn’t have something that anyone would identify as the “Catholic Church”. Kinda messy. Cradle, but long-lapsed, Catholic here so I’m digging back into what I learned as a youngster, and my 70odd year old memory might be less than perfect.

  5. Thinking of Ascension, I was off by a few days.

  6. To the critics; Roman Catholics considered Peter to be the first Pope, based on Matthew 16:18, which has Christ saying “On this rock I will build my church. Catholics belive that Christ was refering to Peter when he used the term Petros, rock.
I had this Final Jeopardy right BEFORE the end of “Think!” today. The part of the answer clue talking about the Apostles, and, the Holy Spirit, made me think of the room where the Apostles hid, and, where the Holy Spirit gave them the “gift of tongues,” the ability to be understood, understand different languages.
The Pentecost is celebrated in the christian faith across many demonitations.

    • Hi Bill, actually Christ was referring to himself when he said those words “On THIS rock, I will build MY CHURCH”. Enough said.

      • Hi Thomas, Yes, Christ was referring to himself when he said “MY church.” However, “on this ROCK” is referring to Peter, the name (meaning stone/rock) that Jesus gave him >> on Peter, I will build my church, so to speak. The primacy of Peter is a key moment for the formation of the Catholic Church (along with Peter’s connection to the church of Rome & the primacy of Rome as the center for Catholicism). Traditionally, Roman Catholic teachings view this verse in Matthew as Jesus’ formation of the papacy, making St. Peter the first Pope & establishing the Roman Catholic Church in the same moment. Now, certainly, the Roman Catholic Church has changed/evolved/developed throughout history, but Catholics believe that’s where it all began.

        • Once more, trafitionally Roman Catholics interpret Matthew 16:18 to mean Christ is referring to Peter, which is why he is considered the first Pope. Other branches of the Christian faith interpret to mean
Christ saying Peter’s FAITH is what he was building His Church with.

    • “Demonitations”?

You don’t have to be Catholic to know about Pentecost. This came to me (not Catholic) right away. Each person may decide for themself when the Catholic Church or any other church actually started. You will note that the clue said, “sometimes.”

If you take away the Daily Doubles, Sophia would have had a pretty decent score. Losing $6600 on DD’s really hurt her chances.

  8. I guessed Easter Sunday, which I wasn’t confident in at all. Lo and behold, I shouldn’t have been. 0 for 3 for the week and 5 for 33 in Season 41. Batting average dropped to .152

Retro congrats to Will on win #2! “Will” he get win #3 tomorrow night? I, like all of us, “will” have to wait until tomorrow to see!

Congrats to Sophia on having 9 crossword puzzles in the NY Times. That’s quite the feat!

  9. Toughest board of the season I would say.

I don’t know if this was the writers’ intent or not, but the wording of the clue and calling the category “The Roman Catholic Church” seems to lean into the bias that the Catholic Church is the only “true” church. You don’t need to know anything about Catholicism per se to get this Final correct.

    • I think you are reading too much into it. The clue’s “of the church” clearly meant “of the church of the category”, not “of The Church”. They could have presented a clue about the founding of any denomination, with that denomination as the category and the clue referencing “the church”.

[I grew up in a southern town where The Church of Christ was the dominant church and I can attest that most of the members there believed that their denomination was the only true church. As an example, every Monday morning my 2nd grade teacher would ask “who all” had gone to church the day before and it was easy to tell that she was not counting the hands up whose parents attended other denominations.]

However, currently the Google AI says that denomination does not believe that they are the “only” church (but does state all the other beliefs I recall about them).
