Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, October 24, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the October 24, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category On The U.K. Music Charts) for Thursday, October 24, 2024 (Season 41, Game 34):

“Candle In The Wind 1997” knocked this song that asked a title question from the top spot as the U.K.’s all-time bestselling song

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Dan Meyer, a fundraising professional from Chicago, Illinois
Dan Meyer on Jeopardy!
Kiki Jamieson, a nonprofit consultant from Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Kiki Jamieson on Jeopardy!
Will Wallace, a game design director from Austin, Texas (2-day total: $28,799)
Will Wallace on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Will Wallace won an important second game yesterday, moving up the standings for Champions Wildcard and/or the 32nd Tournament of Champions. Today, he hopes to win Game #3 against Kiki Jamieson and Dan Meyer. Podcast listeners paying close attention might have noticed that Inside Jeopardy on Monday noted that Will was an alternate for last week’s games—it’s been noted for awhile that being in the studio to watch a week of games taped prior to appearing has been helpful for some.

More information about Final Jeopardy:

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

“Do They Know It’s Christmas?” was the 1984 charity single written by Bob Geldof (The Boomtown Rats) and Midge Ure (Ultravox/Visage) as a fundraiser for the famine in Ethiopia in the early-to-mid-1980s. After being deeply affected by BBC reports of the famine in the fall of 1984, Geldof began recruiting musicians to take part. The song was recorded in late November, shortly before its release, and became one of the fastest-selling songs of all time in the UK, raising over £8 million for Ethiopia within a year. Harry Belafonte saw how the single was received in the UK and put together “We Are The World” in early 1985 to also fundraise for famine relief.

I don’t know how this one is going to play with an American audience; I think this might have been one clue short (though length is an issue with shoehorning in another clue with this Final.) In what might be a small advantage for Kiki here, “Do They Know It’s Christmas” did go to #1 in Canada.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • The terms “Senior Circuit” to refer to the National League (due to its 1876 founding) and “Junior Circuit” to refer to the American League (due to its 1901 founding) were once much more frequently used than they are today, but they are 100% correct terms.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Will $13,400 Kiki $10,800 Dan $8,200)

Will: Standard cover bet over Kiki is $8,201. Because the scores are equally spaced, you should not bet more than this. (Actual bet: $13,399)

Kiki: Standard cover bet over Dan is $5,601. Because the scores are equally spaced, you should not bet more than this. (Actual bet: $5,601)

Dan: You can safely bet between $2,601 and $3,000 today. (Actual bet: $0)

9 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, October 24, 2024"

  1. I actually bought the “Do They Know It’s Christmas” 12-inch the year it came out but it never occurred to me as the answer to today’s clue. The only question-asking UK song I could think of was “Do You Want To Know A Secret” by the Beatles but I knew that wasn’t correct.

  2. As a music buff, I did not get this one correct as I do not know anything about the UK music charts, despite Billboard Magazine reporting on the music scene there weekly.

  3. As it turns out, the correct response is already in the form of a question….So I wonder if “Do They Know it’s Christmas? would have been accepted!!??

    • Yes it would have been accepted, but it wouldn’t happen in FJ! since players are already asked to write “Who is” or “What is” beforehand.

I knew Candle In the Wind 96 was a tribute to Princess Di, but Do They Know It’s Christmas I had no idea of

  5. Katerina E. | October 24, 2024 at 3:33 pm |

Adding “holiday” into the clue would have maybe been clue enough. I didn’t even think of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” for this, and it’s one of my favorite songs, particularly at the holidays! I went with “Do You Think I’m Sexy?” because I couldn’t think of a Beatles song which asked a title question that was as large enough to have lasted 30ish years as the best selling single in the UK.

  6. The only “question” song title I could think of in time was ‘Da ya think I’m sexy?’ which I was quite sure would not be correct even though Rod Stewart is British.

  7. Perhaps should have known this, but it didn’t come to me. Nothing new lately. 0 for 4 for the week and 5 for 34 for Season 41. Batting average of .147

Retro congrats to Will on win #3. Some curious FJ bets tonight.

Have a great Friday everyone! Tomorrow we’ll see if Will can get win #4! 🙂

The only thing I could think of was “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,” which, I have discovered, does not have a question mark in its official title.
