Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, October 29, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the October 29, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category News From The Stork) for Tuesday, October 29, 2024 (Season 41, Game 37):

One of the 10 or so babies born at Argentina’s Esperanza Base in this place was fittingly named Marisa de las Nieves

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

John Liu, a marketing analyst from Santa Monica, California
John Liu on Jeopardy!
Aimée Record, a middle school teacher from Long Island, New York
Aimée Record on Jeopardy!
Ian Taylor, a food sales rep originally from Cleveland, Ohio (1-day total: $19,601)
Ian Taylor on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Cleveland’s Ian Taylor had a very strong performance in general last night in preventing Will Wallace from reaching five victories. Today, he faces off in his title defense against Aimée Record and John Liu.

Correct response: What is Antarctica?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

There are two permanently-inhabited-by-civilian bases on the continent of Antarctica: Argentina’s Esperanza Base and Chile’s Villa Las Estrellas, with Esperanza Base dating back to 1953. Marisa de las Nieves (de las Nieves translating from Spanish to “of the snows”) was the first woman born on the base in 1978.

Assuming contestants can make the translation of “nieves” = “snows”, this should be a straightforward Final Jeopardy clue, in my opinion.

(Categories: Historic Women; Time For Some Drama; An “A” In Psychology; Join Up!; Movie Outlaws; Prefixes)

Oh no! John forgot his phrasing for the second time on DD2—and in that instance, it’s an incorrect response. While John got DD3 correct, a number of Triple Stumpers led to a low score going into Final and John not having a runaway.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

John 13 correct 1 incorrect
Ian 14 correct 5 incorrect
Aimée 9 correct 3 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 3 (1 today).

Scores going into Final:

John $5,600
Ian $3,400
Aimée $600

Both Ian and John were correct in Final; that makes John the new Jeopardy! champion! He’ll be back tomorrow to defend.

Tonight’s results:

Aimée $600 – $598 = $2 (What is Buenos Aires?)
Ian $3,400 + $2,201 = $5,601 (What is Antarctica?)
John $5,600 + $2,201 = $7,801 (What is Antarctica) (1-day total: $7,801)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • A reminder to all viewers that failure to phrase is a warning offense in the Jeopardy! Round and a penalty offense in Double Jeopardy or on Daily Doubles. Ken handled both situations 100% properly per the rules of the show.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: John $5,600 Ian $3,400 Aimée $600)

Ian: I would bet between $1,200 and $2,199. (Actual bet: $2,201)

Aimée: Bet whatever you like—though you might be able to sneak into second with an all-in bet if Ian bets to try to pass John by $1. (Actual bet: $598)

John: Standard cover bet over Ian is $1,201. (Actual bet: $2,201)

  1. Correctly guessed knowing there are plenty of countries with bases in Antarctica so assumed Argentina would have one there. I did not know that nieves is snow, but that may have actually thrown me off being that Antarctica is a desert – I don’t think of snow when I think of Antarctica.

    • Antarctica is mostly covered in ice, which in Spanish would be “hielo”, although “nieve nueva” helps to replenish the “hielo”.

    • I was the exact same situation and result as you were, especially with Argentina being close enough for less trouble going back and forth than for other countries and their bases (such as for the U.S.).

  2. I shouldn’t look at this so early in the morning. I went too specific and said South Pole. Antarctica didn’t even occur to me.

  3. John seemed to make a major math blunder in FJ wagering that could have cost him the win in a triple stumper.

  4. Katerina E. | October 29, 2024 at 2:34 pm |

I knew this just from Esperanza Base, in part because I had a grad school colleague who went to Antarctica for a portion of time, so was aware of “Base” being in the names of most of the scientific research stations there. The remainder of the clue simply confirmed it for me.

  5. Incidentally, just the other day I watched a video clip about discovering oil reserves in Antarctica, and intensified territorial claims using babies being born there, so that was an instant get.

  6. I got the FJ right thanks to reading an old issue of Readers Digest.

  7. I totally missed the part of the Final Jeopardy clue (aanswer) about Esperanza Base, and, focused on translating Nieves, thinking it was a number.
John recovered from a critical mistake when he forgot the cardinal rule of Jeopardy. Your response MUST be in the form of a question.

    • When Ken paused after the failure to phrase, I wonder, would it have been enough to add “is it?” to satisfy the rule, or are the contestants required to utter the response in its entirety in form of a question, potentially running out of time?

      • Ask Masterdodge, who beises Andy, seems to be the expert on what is, and, is not acceptable.

        • I’m flattered 🙂

As for Leo’s inquiry, unless the clue is asking for Yoda, I don’t think you’d be able to simply add “is it?” after your answer to have that count. You’d more than likely have to repeat the answer with appropriate phrasing.

That being said, as long as you start your answer before the “beep beep beep” tells you you’re out of time, you’re in the clear! (It also has to be correct, obviously, but that’s a whole different story.)

          • I see, thank you! So the actual rule appears to be, then, that a response must be in the form of an open-ended question.

  8. Chris Smith | October 29, 2024 at 6:13 pm |

It was pretty easy for me since I speak Spanish and my spouse is in Antarctica right now.

  9. I missed! 0 for 2 for the week and 5 for 37 on the Season.
