Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Movies & Psychology) for Friday, November 22, 2024 (Season 41, Game 55):

In this film Paula Alquist tells Gregory Anton, “Have you gone mad, my husband? Or is it I who am mad?”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Adam Hersh, an attorney from Brooklyn, New York
Adam Hersh on Jeopardy!
Courtney Schooley, a preschool teacher from Tulsa, Oklahoma
Courtney Schooley on Jeopardy!
Mehal Shah, a software engineer from Seattle, Washington (2-day total: $46,062)
Mehal Shah on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After picking up over $20,000 in a four-clue span in yesterday’s game, Mehal Shah comes into today’s game looking to pick up a third victory. That third victory will put him into the Tournament of Champions, while a loss will mean that Mehal’s postseason journey will continue in Champions Wildcard. Courtney Schooley of Tulsa and Adam Hersh of Brooklyn are your challengers.

Correct response: What is Gaslight?

More information about Final Jeopardy:

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Gaslight is a 1944 film, starring Ingrid Bergman as Paula and Charles Boyer as Gregory, where Gregory manipulates Paula into believing that she is descending into insanity—with the name of the film coming from the fact that Paula notices that the gas lighting is dimming for no apparent reason when Gregory isn’t home. The film’s title was later used to describe emotional manipulation that causes others to question their own perception of reality—one example of this behavior might be to tell another person that their easily provable observation of past events is “fiction.”

Having certainly been the victim of attempted gaslighting in the recent past, I personally found this Final Jeopardy clue to be very straightforward. It’ll be interesting to see how others in the community fare on this clue.

10 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, November 22, 2024"

  1. I got this instantly. I never knew what was happening to me as a person of 12 years of age was called “gaslighting”, but it certainly can damage the victim. After watching the movie “Gaslight” in 2012, I finally realized what had been happening to me, and then who was responsible for the behavior towards me. I do not trust that family member anymore.

    • Sorry that you had to go through that as a 12 year old and by a family member is even worse.

      • The gaslighting just did not happen while I was 12 years old, but throughout life by this family member, who also gaslighted other family members, turning family members against each other. Makes you wonder about the human mind of this sorrowful family member. I was 57 when I saw “Gaslight” and realized then what had been going on, and still going on. I have since spoken up!!!

  2. Oops. I added an “ing”to the title,no doubt thinking of Steely Dan”s song “Gaslighting Abbie” where I first became aware of the term.

  3. Robert J. Fawkes | November 22, 2024 at 7:22 pm |

I didn’t recognize the names of the characters but the quote sure said, “Gaslight,” to me. Came to me so quickly, I thought it would be a triple get. I never heard of Mehal’s response so that wasn’t even a consideration for me.

    • It was the same for me. I know of the term “Gaslighting.” Knew that it came from a movie. But never having seen it, didn’t know the year it was released, or, it’s lead performers. Like the Louisville Final Jeopardy from the other day, Gaslight just seemed right. So I end the week with 2 wins 3 losses. A .400 average. In baseball, that “batting average” might take you far. On Jeopardy, it all depends on how you, and, your opponets wager.

  4. Is “apertif” an accepted alternate spelling for “apéritif” since the show accepted Mehal’s 3 syllable response, or is the syllable rule loosened for non-English words?
The closed captioning of Mehal’s response spelled it apéritif, but the closed captioning isn’t always accurate with what’s spoken. I said it the same way he did, though reading it, I was thrown by that I between the R and T, as well as Ken’s 4 syllable follow up. Doing some Googling, it appears that “apertif” is used by a lot of liquor stores.

  5. I was thinking One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Never seen either movie.

1 for 5 for the week to “improve” to 7 for 55 for the season. Batting average went from .120 to .127. LOL

Have a great weekend everyone and we’ll see what Monday brings!
