Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category International Universities) for Thursday, November 21, 2024 (Season 41, Game 54):
Following student unrest in 1968, in 1970 the University of this city was divided into 13 smaller ones
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Holly Luo, a product designer originally from San Diego, California![]() |
Jack Altman, a law student from New York, New York![]() |
Mehal Shah, a software engineer from Seattle, Washington (1-day total: $9,799)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Mehal Shah was the winner yesterday, winning just under $10,000. Today’s challengers are New York’s Jack Altman and San Diego’s Holly Luo. Holly has had some strong Online Quiz League performances—while that isn’t always transferrable over to the Alex Trebek Stage, it would not surprise me if she did well in today’s game.

In the 1960s, the French university system was in trouble—the system had failed to account for the post-World War II baby boom, and conditions in French universities were considered poor. Students began protesting, and these protests came to a head in the spring of 1968 in Paris. By May, the protests had turned nationwide and were only quelled by the dissolution of Parliament. As a result, by 1970 the French government restructured the University of Paris into 13 different institutions.
Knowledge of France’s protests in 1968 will certainly help in getting this Final correct, though Czechoslovakia’s 1968 protests, which might lead players to Prague, is a big red herring today.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I agree with “United Arab Emirates” not being promptable on that Abu Dhabi clue—after all, you wouldn’t ask a contestant to be more specific answering “the United States” when the correct response is “New Jersey”.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

My reasoning: Paris has 13 arrondissements. The only hint I had.
In the end, Paris actually has 20 arrondissements and has nothing to do with the clue.
A total fluke
The baby boom had an influence on universities in the United States as well. Many schools admitted additional graduate students in order to assist with the teaching of an influx of undergraduates. That’s how I became a TA.
I immediately thought “Prague Spring” on seeing the year. I fell for the red herring.
You and me both, but my mouth didn’t even utter Prague, though that’s what my brain was thinking. LOL
Like Mehal, I thought what was Bejing? I had I thought a little longer,I might have come up with Prague. I knew nothing of an unrest by French students about problems with the university of Paris back in 1968.So, hoping for a win tomorrow to finish the week
In 1968, I was much more concerned with riots and student unrest taking place in the United States due to a couple of significant assassinations as well as protests against the war in Viet Nam. Because of what was happening in the US in 1968, I had no idea there was student unrest in Paris, too. What a year 1968 was.
I was thinking that, too.
I thought it would be common knowledge among hardcore Jeopardy fans that France saw protests in 1968.
I am even impressed by the two contestants who were wrong in FJ but correct that it was a foreign country. With ’68 and ’70 being within the Vietnam War based campus unrest in the U.S., I took it for granted that it was here and just guessed New York City because it is so big [and also liberal, so presumably a lot of Vietnam War protesters] and seems to now have a lot of colleges and universities with ‘New York’ in their names.
I suppose they knew to consider foreign schools because the category was ‘International Universities’ but I had assumed that was just an attempt to keep the possibilities broad, like saying ‘person’ instead of ‘man’ or ‘woman’. Is “international” a Jeopardy code word for “foreign” as I thought that “international universities” were those set up specifically to draw students from multiple countries?
When Jeopardy producers use words like “international” and “foreign,” they mean outside of the U.S.
That feeling when you’re tracking your Coryat and thinking “oh, I’d have killed it today!” after recording one of your best games ever… only to look up and see the $37,600 on Mehal’s podium that you forgot about 🙃
Mexico City could also be added to the least of perfectly plausible incorrect answers.
Fantastic game all around.
Missed…..thought it was that city in Czechoslovakia…..uh…Prague….though my mouth couldn’t utter it during Think.
1 for 4 for the week and 7 for 54 for the season.
