Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:

Season 3 of Celebrity Jeopardy! begins tonight, immediately following the conclusion of Abbott Elementary at 9:00 (8:00 Central) on ABC in the United States and CTV in Canada. Our opening three celebrities are comedian W. Kamau Bell, known for CNN’s United Shades of America, playing for DonorsChoose, Camilla Luddington, known as Jo Wilson on Grey’s Anatomy, playing for I Stand With My Pack, and Max Greenfield, who received Emmy nominations for his role as Schmidt on FOX’s New Girl, playing for Wags and Walks. As always, there are complaints regarding the celebrity status of some of the guests—after looking up the resumes of tonight’s player, I have to completely disagree. We have someone who hosts a show on a major cable news network, an Emmy-nominated actor, and an actress on one of the longest-running primetime shows in TV history. If you don’t know these people, that is 100% a skill issue on your part as a viewer.

Now, one thing that definitely cropped up last season—and I hinted at this last season over on one of Nicole Holliday’s columns over on the now-defunct Questionist, and that I worry might happen tonight—Camilla was born in England. If the more academic material tonight ends up tending to match what an American might learn in school, I worry that this might work to Camilla’s disadvantage.

8 Comments on "Celebrity Jeopardy! Game Recap – Wednesday, January 8, 2025"

  1. We do now have a mini-site with the matchups for all nine quarterfinals.

    https://www.jeopardy.com/track/celebrity-jeopardy/season-3

  2. Willie Mays was an incorrect answer. Hank Aaron is the correct answer.

    • Speaking as someone who has two books on baseball published, including one that literally had a chapter on Barry Bonds:

You, Trey, are 100% incorrect. Firstly, that was a picture of Willie Mays. Secondly, Willie Mays is Barry Bonds’s godfather. Thirdly, Bonds passed Aaron in 2007. He passed Mays’s home run total, however, in 2004.

  3. Guessed correctly despite never thinking of macadamia nuts are seeds. I love them, but they are a bit out of my budget.

  4. To me this was straight forward. Hawaii. Trees. Corp. I guess Pineapple could fit, but wouldn’t that be considered the literal fruit of the Pineapple tree? A nut would be considered the seed of a tree, like acorns are for Oaks. So for Hawaii it would be Macadamia nuts.
(I was suprised to learn that the Hawaiian spelling of Hawai’i is NOT considered official, because the punctuation mark between the “I’s” was not used in the act creating the state of Hawaii.)

    • Much the same for me, immediately thinking of coconuts and pineapples, but ruling them out as not fitting the whole clue. Then I quickly thought of Macadamia nuts due to their being such a “valuable crop” (of expensive seeds).

[The terms nuts and seeds are often thought of as interchangeable (and they often are in common names such as “Macadamia nuts), but they are technically different and those most aware are the people with tree nut allergies because they can usually eat seeds.]
