Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Our final Pop Culture Jeopardy matchup of Week 6 features Team Shenanigans, Together We’re T.I.M., and In Our Jeopardy! Era. I have to say, seeing a team called Tim brings me back to my days hosting trivia at Squirrel Tooth Alice’s (the fact the venue was the direct cause of my first bout of therapy notwithstanding,—r/Jeopardy is very much in danger of being the direct cause of my second), and I’m honestly surprised that it’s not the “The Bullpen” team—who you’ll see three weeks from now—who managed to steal that name from another team in the competition.

One thing that has come out over the past few weeks from multiple contestants is that the “ELVIS” signaling system is different for Pop Culture Jeopardy, as compared to the regular game. On the regular show, if you buzz early, you are locked out for a quarter of a second. However—and I presume this is the case because the system likely had technical restrictions and didn’t want one player going early and locking out their two teammates—there is no lockout penalty, with the first player in after the system is activated getting to respond. This change did seem to catch some players by surprise slightly, but I do think there were technical reasons behind this change, and I doubt we’ll see it move over to the main show for that reason. (I also think that it would equalize the buzzer too much, and it would have unintended consequences that would do significant harm to the show’s long-term viability, as I think it would upset the delicate balance that currently exists between keeping the game playable for the home viewer and having a buzzer format that does permit superchampions on occasion—in order to keep the show in the public eye in the much more fractured media landscape.)

After T.I.M. got DD2 incorrect, Jeopardy Era took a long time to find DD3. When they did, they went for a much-too-conservative 3,000 points on a second-row clue with quotation marks in it, and although they got it correct, they were still well short of a runaway going into Final Jeopardy.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

In Our Jeopardy! Era 20 correct 3 incorrect
Together We’re T.I.M. 27 correct 5 incorrect
Team Shenanigans 7 correct 2 incorrect

Scores going into Final:

In Our Jeopardy! Era 18,800
Together We’re T.I.M. 12,800
Team Shenanigans 5,600

All three teams were correct; In Our Jeopardy! Era advances to the next round.

Tonight’s results:

Team Shenanigans 5,600 + 5,600 = 11,200 (What is The Emoji Movie?)
Together We’re T.I.M. 12,800 + 12,800 = 25,600 (What is The Emoji Movie)
In Our Jeopardy! Era 18,800 + 6,801 = 25,601 (What is The Emoji Movie?) (Quarter-Finalist)

  1. The Emoji Movie has always been extremely weird to me – because, for as hated as it is, it doesn’t feel like it was destined to be hated. If even just a little more time was spent polishing the writing or the voice acting, it could’ve been amazing… but because of that lack of polish, the execution was disappointing at best. And I’m sure Patrick Stewart did not feel very happy about the fact that his career went from portraying characters in Shakespeare and Star Trek to voice acting a literal pile of sh—
