Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, January 13, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the January 13, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Historic Currency) for Monday, January 13, 2025 (Season 41, Game 91):

Henry VII minted the first pound coin in 1489, which was called this, also a term for what Henry was

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Jen Feldman, a high school teacher from Brooklyn, New York
Jen Feldman on Jeopardy!
Paul Clauson, a tax analyst from Madison Heights, Michigan
Paul Clauson on Jeopardy!
Will Yancey, a lecturer of history from Banquete, Texas
Will Yancey on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The 2025 Jeopardy! postseason continues along with the opening game of Champions Wildcard, where 13 players who fell just short of ToC qualification join Second Chance winners Will Yancey and Drew Goins in this week’s quarterfinals. Longtime fans might be excited to see the return of tournament wildcards for the first time since the 2021 Professor’s Tournament. For those who need a refresher: the 5 quarterfinal winners and top 4 nonwinning scores advance to next week’s semifinals. Our first quarterfinal features Will Yancey, Paul Clauson, and Jen Feldman; while I already mentioned Will as having advanced from Second Chance, both Paul and Jen were 2-game champions over the past year. In my preview, I did note that both Will and Paul had been stronger on the signaling device; I also implied that Jen’s play tended to be more consistent in stating that the prediction model thought she had a good chance of a wild card. It will be interesting to see how the week plays out.

In tracking wild card chances this week, I’ll be comparing scores to the Teachers/Professors Tournament scores of old, as that is the tournament that I believe to be most analogous to what is happening this week (adult-level contestants on regular-difficulty clues).

Finally, there are pre-emptions today if you watch the show on ABC at 7:30 PM Eastern or later, due to ABC’s coverage of the Minnesota Vikings–Los Angeles Rams game. Check local listings—or, if you would like, Matt Carberry’s Google Sheet.

Officially valued at one pound, the historic English sovereign was originally minted by King Henry VII, and was a bullion coin (more an investment piece instead of circulating currency). It was called a sovereign due to its portrait of the monarch on its obverse face. Weighing one-half a troy ounce and consisting of first 23-karat, then 22-karat gold, this version of the sovereign existed until 1604 when James I called the coin a “unite” to recognize the unification of the Scottish and English thrones; the name sovereign was used again to refer to a one pound (20 shilling) coin in 1817.

Game Recap & Tonight’s Game Stats:

Looking to find out who won Jeopardy! today? Here’s the Monday, January 13, 2025 Jeopardy! by the numbers, along with a recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: 2015: 10 Years Ago; Latinas; Other Uses Of Texting Abbreviations; TV This Century; Science; That Phrase Is Money)

Paul got off to a strong start, but his score dropped back to $0 just before the break with a missed True Daily Double. After 15 clues, Jen led with $1,800, to Will’s $1,400 and Paul’s $0.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Jen 2 correct 0 incorrect
Will 4 correct 1 incorrect
Paul 6 correct 2 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Jen saw colleagues and student dress as her on her airdates.
Paul had some regrets and self-doubt about his loss a few months back.
Will had people offering to buy him the Percy Jackson books for Christmas.

Paul picked up 10 of the 15 clues after the break to storm back into the lead.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Paul 16 correct 2 incorrect
Jen 5 correct 0 incorrect
Will 6 correct 1 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Paul $4,600
Jen $2,800
Will $2,600

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Are You Surreal?; Anatomical Song Titles; People Of The Book; MacArthur Fellows; There In The World Is That; Ends In “UE”)

In an absolutely correct ruling by Ken and the show, Paul missed another True Daily Double by adding an “S” to a title that also made the response incorrect based on what information was given in the clue. Jen found DD3, but her only incorrect response of the round saw her lose $3,000. She held a $400 lead over Will going into Final—and with scores slightly lower, it’s going to be very interesting betting in Final because of the four wild cards.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Jen 12 correct 1 incorrect
Will 14 correct 2 incorrect
Paul 26 correct 7 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 26 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Jen $10,200
Will $9,800
Paul $4,000

Paul and Will were correct in Final; Jen was not. That makes Will the automatic semifinalist, with Jen and Paul probably on tenterhooks for the rest of the week in the wild card race.

Tonight’s results:

Paul $4,000 + $4,000 = $8,000 (What is sovereign?)
Will $9,800 + $4,000 = $13,800 (What is a sovereign?) (Semi-Finalist)
Jen $10,200 – $2,000 = $8,200 (What is a Tudor Crown? Hi Loma!)

Will Yancey, today's Jeopardy! winner (for the January 13, 2025 game.)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Ken’s opening statement where he said 1 spot was available leads me to believe that none of the contestants were aware of Lisa Ann Walter’s withdrawal from the Tournament of Champions, and thus they would be playing to win in the final.
  • I generally don’t post wagering suggestions where wild cards are in play, because oftentimes a more conservative bet can be called for because of wild cards.
  • It is also my belief that any criticism of the game’s second Daily Double is invalid. Ken specifically explained why Paul’s response was incorrect, and saying “we want the title” is, in my opinion, completely superfluous. Of course, these words will never make it onto subreddit due to the tortious interference that the r/Jeopardy moderators have undertaken over the past few months.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

10 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, January 13, 2025"

  1. I guessed beefeater which would not only be an odd word for a coin, but was something that Henry was not. Oh, well.

  2. Sovereign came to me immediately — wish that happened more often — so I am predicting a triple get, or at least 2 out of 3.

  3. In Ray Lalonde’s final game in his original run, there was a similar question about 21 shillings being a guinea, but he missed it by saying “sovereign”. It was a bottom row clue, and the woman, Claire, got it on the rebound. I remember it because my friend’s son Lloyd became champion that day.

  4. I could only guess, so I went with crown, also.

    • Same here, though I felt that when the correct response was given I would be “duh” and I was correct about that.

  5. In DD2, Paul plainly came against a well known Jeopardy rule; when the correct response is a title, the exact title is wwhat is called for, leaving nothing out, or, adding to it.
I am vaguely aware of some of the terms used for UK currency, though for many, not their value. The answer clue called for a synonym for a King, or, Monarch, that was also a UK currency term. Sovereign fit both. And, I was right.
If one is somewhat aware of terms used for UK currency, this could have been straight forward. It seemed to be for two of today’s players.

    • Indeed, the word “term” (which I sadly overlooked) rules out proper names such as names of royal houses.

  6. I missed the first answer when i turned on my TV. i heard the question was “who are kermit and miss piggy?”, then ken said he was thinking “ernie & bert” himself, but what was the answer?

  7. I said Royal for FJ. I will definitely enjoy this week’s games because I haven’t seen this format, as I got back to watching Jeopardy in February 2022.

Retro congrats to Will on moving on to the Semifinals.
