Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Countries of the World) for Tuesday, January 14, 2025 (Season 41, Game 92):
“Bilady, Bilady, Bilady”, its national anthem, replaced a more militaristic one following a 1979 peace treaty
(correct response beneath the contestants)

Stevie Ruiz, an assistant front office manger from Montauk, New York![]() |
Davey Morrison, an actor & filmmaker from Provo, Utah![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Today is Day 2 of Winter 2025′ Champions Wildcard, with Davey Morrison, Stevie Ruiz, and Evan Dorey returning to the Alex Trebek Stage. Davey and Stevie won twice recently, while Evan was a high-scoring one-day winner.
For the newer diehard fans who don’t remember how this format has worked in the past (as it’s been just over three years since it’s been used by the show), the five winners this week are joined in the semifinals by the highest-scoring non-winners. So that the players playing at the end of the week don’t have in advantage, they have been sequestered so they don’t know what the scores of the previous games are. Thus, Davey, Stevie, and Evan have no idea that in yesterday’s game, Jen Feldman scored $8,200 and Paul Clauson $8,000.

“Bilady, Bilady, Bilady” has served as the National Anthem of Egypt since 1979, following the Egypt–Israel peace treaty, signed on March 26, 1979. It replaced the more militaristic “Walla Zaman Ya Selahy”, which had gained popularity in the country after Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal.
Remembering that the Egypt–Israel peace treaty took place in 1979, following the Camp David Accords the previous year, is probably the easiest way to get this clue correct. Interestingly, the death of Jimmy Carter between the taping and airing of this clue might actually make this clue easier, as Carter brokered the peace talks between Egypt’s Anwar Sadat and Israel’s Menachem Begin.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I have zero issue with Davey’s Final Jeopardy wagering choice. It’s clear he thought that with where his score was that he needed to be correct in Final Jeopardy to advance—and that is a very fair assessment of the situation, in my opinion. And I can never fault a player for going all in when you think an incorrect response eliminates you.
- Why does Davey have a greater-than-zero chance of advancing with $0? Because there is a very minuscule chance of every remaining player finishing with $0 (or less) and losing the tiebreaker (money going into Final Jeopardy), therefore giving Davey the fourth spot. $0 has also advanced as a wild card score in the past (the 2003 Tournament of Champions).
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Maybe I found this one easy with the recent passing of Carter, but I hope I would have gotten it anyway. Guessing the treaty they meant was the one between Egypt and Israel, and being familiar with the Israeli national anthem, I guessed Egypt.
Fairly easy because of 1979, made easier by the news surrounding the passing of President Carter. I wonder what Bilady means in Arabic?
It means ‘My country’
Ken gave that translation when he revealed the correct response.
“1979 peace treaty” immediately led me to Begin and Sadat, and I was pretty sure those were not Jewish lyrics, so I knew it had to be Egypt. I’m sure that recent events helped.
Actually, Ken said, “My homeland, my homeland, my homeland”.
I was certainly wrong when my response was “South Africa”!!!
South Africa was nowhere near peace in 1979.
I was with Stevie on this one; I heard/read Bilady and couldn’t get Ireland out of my head. Never crossed my mind that it could also be Arabic.
Ireland was my first thought too, until I remembered 1979 was the Israel/Egypt treaty, and bilady is not a Hebrew word. I was left with Egypt with 5 seconds to spare.
Well, my predictions are going about as wrong as they possibly could, aren’t they? 🙂
Today my (lack of) success in having the correct response for Today’s Final Jeopardy is filled with “ifs.” If I had remembered the Camp David accords had been signed in 1979, If I had known that Bilady was Arabic for country…
But I didn’t.
If you’d remembered that the Camp David Accords had been signed in 1979, you would have remembered incorrectly. They were signed in September of 1978. The peace treaty hat followed was signed in March of 1979.
I said Iran, because “Biladi” sounded vaguely Persian to me. As it happens, I was not alone.
Andy- I appreciate your daily posting of the Wild Card standings. Interesting that a $200 separation between contestants results in such a large percentage difference in the prediction model for advancement.
I think it would be the same if it were 1 dollar separation. It’s not the amount but where they stand in the ranking.
It wouldn’t be quite the same; it is better to be at 8199 than 8000, but a lot of the difference comes from the fact that more people need to pass Jen’s score than Paul’s to respectively eliminate them.
I went with Evan and said Vietnam, thinking perhaps a peace treaty with China, when they fought a war at that time.
I knew about Camp David and the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel and just couldn’t decide which, so that’s why I went to Vietnam for my answer.
