Streaming Rights News To Come In April

A decision that will give viewers more options on how to watch Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune beginning in September will be coming by April, according to a report today in the New York Times. Sony Pictures Entertainment is currently soliciting bids for the next-day streaming rights to both shows, currently the top two game shows in American broadcast syndication and two of the most-watched series on broadcast television in the United States.

From 2025 until 2028, this would be for the next-day streaming rights to the shows (meaning, today’s episode would become available on streaming tomorrow morning), while 2028 would see same-day streaming available, as all pre-existing syndication deals are expiring in 2028. Sony also stressed in the article that this is completely separate from the current ongoing court battle with CBS Media Ventures, who currently holds the distribution rights for the syndication contract.

I see these developments as good news for the shows in general, and will hopefully keep the shows in the eyes of the general population for decades to come. One thing that I would love to see—certainly as something that might appease the very vocal minority of fans who long for as much regular play as possible—is for “extra” tournament episodes to be made available as extra content for whichever streaming platform earns the rights.

No word was reported as to how much of the show’s back catalog—over 40 years’ worth of episodes for both programs—might be included in such a deal, though as things stand right now, J! Archive is only missing around 200 episodes in total.
