Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:
Today on UK Jeopardy!, we have 3-day champion Abby Hallett taking on Birkenhead’s Jim Eccleson and Croydon’s Shanine Salmon. Shanine has become well-known to American quizzers over the past few years, having participated in Online Quiz League competitions in both England and North America. One thing that Abby will have an advantage on, though: the signaling device—and that has been a strength for Abby thus far. She’s gotten in first on over 40% of all buzzer clues asked throughout her run. That being said, the fact that there are 44 more buzzer clues in a Series 2 UK match compared to a standard American one means that challengers do have more of an opportunity to get the buzzer timing down, and I do think that will make it more difficult for challengers to get an extended run together. We’ll see what happens today, though!

Shanine £2,400 + £400 = £2,800 (What is arsenic)

Andy’s Thoughts:
- One thing I’ve noticed is that the British judges have made calls that wouldn’t be made the same way in America, likely through not realizing some of the minor-but-important rules nuances of the American version.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Abby £4,375 Shanine £2,400 Jim £1,425)
Abby: Standard cover bet is £426. (Actual bet: £450)
Jim: You need an overbet from Abby to have any chance. Bet whatever you’d like. (Actual bet: £1,425)
Shanine: If Abby bets to cover and is incorrect, she falls to £3,949. You have to bet at least £1,550 to have any chance of victory. (Actual bet: £400)

I can’t recall the last time I saw a US J! 4-time champ who was 0-4 in Final. Abby has made the most of her gameplay before Final and, at least in this case, was certainly helped by a less than optimal wager from the second place player.
The only one I can recall was Meredith Robbins (4x champion in Season 25).
Ironically, her loss was the only game where she actually got Final correct (her fifth game)… and coincidentally, her loss was because she didn’t bet enough!
That’s interesting, I hadn’t noticed that statistic. It feels like a random anomaly given how good Abby is.
For what it’s worth, I guessed successfully. Based on ‘metalloid’ and the relatively low atomic number I narrowed it down to one section of the periodic table and then tried to guess a well known poison that fit those restrictions, which took about half of the time to do.
I feel a bit embarrassed admitting I got Final right, as it means I’m 3/4 on the last four Finals, and yet all three were guesses. I didn’t actually know any of them. It’s been clear from watching the last eight episodes that my overall trivia knowledge is well short of all the contestants we’ve seen on the series.
Maybe the slightly different structure of the clues in Final is a factor. Subjectively, it feels as though some of the clues in Final have been a bit more like the American ones in the last few days. Up until then they could often be ‘you either know it or you don’t’ (for example last Monday’s one asking for a specific historical date).
It’s been a real joy to see how good the contestants have been on the show, I think they’ve all been great. Today all three of them seemed really strong. There were 34 correct responses out of 35 in the first round, which I think is the highest number since they changed to 35 clue rounds over here. Jim made the pertinent point early on about how strong the other two were on the buzzer, and I’m glad that just as Andy said above, the format of the game gave him enough time to demonstrate his quiz prowess once he got the hang of the timing.
And it was great to see a fellow resident of Croydon on the show in Shanine.
I didn’t try to narrow it down like David did. I don’t think I ever had parts of the periodic table memorized but I would have thought that lead is too heavy to be that low down on the table. But I didn’t have to think about it because arsenic came to me immediately as a well-known (even famous) poisonous substance and I thought that probably most people do not think of it as a metalloid element (though I was sure it was), so I guessed [yes, guessed] “What is arsenic?”
