Warning: This page contains spoilers for the July 11, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Historic Objects) for Friday, July 11, 2025 (Season 41, Game 220):

Described as both a “beautiful violet” & “French Blue” in the 1600s, this object went on tour in the 1900s before landing in the Smithsonian

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Edaureen Muhamad Nor, a book critic from Silver Spring, Maryland
Edaureen Muhamad Nor on Jeopardy!
Andrew Wang, a medical student from Winnetka, Illinois
Andrew Wang on Jeopardy!
Scott Riccardi, an engineer from Somerville, New Jersey (6-day total: $149,901)
Scott Riccardi on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Scott Riccardi survived a bit of a bump in the road in yesterday’s game, picking up just $4,999 after he got all four of the game’s major clues incorrect. Today, he goes for win #7 against Edaureen Muhamad Nor and Andrew Wang—much like Dan Puma earlier in the week, Andrew Wang is very well known to top quiz bowl players. We’ll see how much Scott’s game yesterday has affected him and if he’ll be able to rebound in order to sweep the week.

A common clue subject on Jeopardy!, the Hope Diamond is currently the centerpiece of the Harry Winston Gallery at the Smithsonian, after Winston donated one of the world’s largest diamonds to the Smithsonian in 1958 at the conclusion of a multi-year tour. Found in India in the 1600s, it was purchased by the French and spent most of the 17th and 18th centuries as part of the French crown jewels. Although it went missing during the French Revolution, the 45.52-carat diamond resurfaced in England in the early 19th century before making its way to the United States in the early 20th century.

Interestingly, the last time a clue about the Hope Diamond played—in a game featuring Andrew He—it fell for a Triple Stumper. We’ll see how it plays today.

  1. Too funny! The only answer I could come up with was The Hope Diamond, and then I told myself I was wrong, but, because I had to have an answer, that’s what I went with. Sometimes you just get lucky.

  2. Having seen the Hope Diamond at the Smithsonian in 1977, it was the only guess that I had.

  3. The “beautiful violet” part of the clue put me off for a brief moment but I ended up getting it right. I’ve seen it at the Smithsonian, and “violet” is not a word I would use to describe its color. Simply blue, or French blue, or periwinkle (maybe), but not violet.

    • The flowers of violets (or at least a lot of them) are quite blue even though the word makes one think of amethysts.

  4. As a DC guy, Hope Diamond was an easy get.

    Also, 5/5 week baby! WHOO!

  5. Blue was the cue. Instant idea, Hope diamond.

  6. “French Blue” + 1600s and 1900s mentioned in the clue… yeah, there was really only one answer. Nice to end the week with a get, although I feel like my get rate for Fridays is disproportionately higher when compared to the rest of the week! :p

    • That because you’re ready for the weekend? By the way, I am going to the 10 a.m. taping on Friday, August 8. So if you’re there, we’ll have to meet up. 🙂

  7. Maybe it was the description of it’s color, or, just something random. But as Ken finished reading the answer/clue, I said (what is) the Hope Diamond. Not at all confident in my response, was extremely happy to find out I finished the week with a win.
Happy Birthday Johnny Gilbert. I was happy to see everyone had recorded congratulations for you. Sad to see you weren’t in studio to recieve them, and, a cake,

  8. Wow, great game. Thanks to all three contestants for a super competitive game. Lot of fun to watch.

Living in the Maryland suburbs of D.C., I’ve seen the Hope Diamond when chaperoning class trips, on dates when I was younger, when serving as tour guide for out of town visitors, and family educational excursions. This one was a can’t miss final for me because of so much familiarity with the Hope Diamond. Not surprised at all at a Triple Get.

    • I only saw it once many years ago (sometime in the latter part of the 1970s) but I “got” it from the beginning of the clue and just became even more confident at the end of the clue.

  10. Once again, I had no idea on tonight’s FJ. Oh well!

2 weeks to go in the season.

Tonight’s game was a great one, played by 3 awesome players. Quite the charge by Scott to retake the lead and thus, win the game!

Retro congrats on win #7. Looking forward to seeing if he can get win #8 on Monday, but here’s to a nice and relaxing weekend first! 🙂

  11. Does anyone know the record for highest 3rd place score? Tonight has to be at or very close to the top.

    • In the first week of Season 39 Second Chance in December 2023, Jake Garrett finished his semifinal in third place despite having a score of $35,800 at the end of the game.

The regular play record is much older – in October 1992, Chuck Wills finished his second game in third place despite a score of $16,000 (which translates to $32,000 in today’s values). Without the doubling of dollar values, the record belongs to Margaret Miles, who finished with a third place score of $31,999 in Andrew Pau’s first game in April 2016.

    Hey Jeff!

I was unable to watch last night’s match, but as usual read Andy’s recap very carefully.

The section on Scott’s overall statistics was very revealing. Quite impressive stats in most categories.

I am wondering where he ranks in correct/incorrect ratio?

    • Back during the rash of ultra champions [about four years ago?] I was keeping up with their error rates and they were sometimes averaging around 4%. Looking back after their streaks ended, Mattea Roach’s was about 8.5%, Matt Amodio’s about 8%, Amy Schneider about 5% and James Holtzhauer about 3%. During that period other champions rarely got down much close to 10%. [After that “boundary” continued for a while I quit keeping up with it.] Scott’s error rate is currently a Mattea-like 8.5%. Just during Ken’s 74-game winning streak, his was 8.9%. So I’d say Scott is doing quite well concerning percent correct, but not breaking any records.

      • Rick Hock | July 13, 2025 at 7:15 am |

        Lisa!

Thanks so much for this analysis!!

        • Yes, thank you Lisa!

And Rick, after the game on July 11, Scott had 167 correct/15 wrong and that’s not counting FJ. His FJ responses, were 6 correct/1 wrong.

That translates to 91.76% correct and 8.24% wrong. Pretty stout!
