Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category TV) for Thursday, July 3, 2025 (Season 41, Game 214):
“Lord of the Flies” inspired this series as did the 1994 film “Heavenly Creatures”, which starred one of the show’s actresses

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Scott Riccardi, an engineer from Somerville, New Jersey![]() |
Katy Doll, an instructor of American studies originally from New Orleans, Louisiana![]() |
Jason Singer, a real estate agent from Portland, Maine (2-day total: $48,801)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
For the first time since mid-June, we have a multi-day champion on Jeopardy! in Jason Singer, who has been impressing me over his first two victories with a wide breadth of knowledge. Today, he faces off against Katy Doll and Scott Riccardi as he continues what I might consider to be the forlorn task of trying to get his wife Susan another chance on the show. I hate to say it, but Susan had her opportunity, as well as an opportunity to come back in the fall of 2023, and without any public-facing improvement of her skills, I can’t see her being given another single-person opportunity on the Alex Trebek Stage.
I’d also like to take this time to acknowledge that both Jason and the Portland Press-Herald have now noted that while “both halves of a married couple winning on Jeopardy!” is a rare and noteworthy occurrence, Jason is certainly not part of the first couple to have done so. Hopefully, also, Entertainment Weekly’s reporting on the situation will also help to set the record straight. Certainly, I’ll be adding to the Statistics area of this page over the coming weeks.

After seeing Internet comments on an announcement for a gender-swapped version of Lord of the Flies expressing skepticism that teenage girls would be as barbaric as teenage boys, Yellowjackets creator Ashley Lyle set out to prove otherwise. The show, which has been airing on Showtime since 2021, is set in 1996 and 2021; in the 1990s, a high school girl’s soccer team from New Jersey crashes in the Canadian wildnerness while en route to a national championship tournament in Seattle; the survivors are forced to survive in the wilderness for 19 months. In the present day, the show follows the lives of the survivors, dealing with their trauma of the time in the wildnerness and what they had to do in order to survive. It stars Melanie Lynskey as the adult Shauna Sadecki; Melanie was one of the stars of the 1994 film Heavenly Creatures (alongside Kate Winslet—both were making their feature film debuts), which also deals with the nature of teenagehood; in that film, the two characters, Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme, plan the premeditated murder of Pauline’s mother.
This is the sort of clue that highlights just how fractured the media landscape of the 2020s is. Take everything back 30 years, this would have been a Final Jeopardy clue on the easier side. But in 2020, just by virtue of how much media has changed, significantly fewer people watch each show—which makes asking questions about current TV significantly harder. This is also why I think the show chose just “TV” as its category, because specifying an era at this point—with current TV being so much more difficult—would cause an astute contestant to wager more conservatively. And, as I’ve said recently, conservative betting on Jeopardy! makes for a more boring game.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I was just as confused when watching as to why Ken permitted just single responses in the heteronyms category. Fortunately, even had Scott been ruled incorrect on those two clues, the overall outcome of tonight’s game would not have changed.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

PREDICTION: At least one contestant will say “Lost”. I hope. I mean, I did.
I did, too. I’ve never watched Lost. But I’ve also never watched Yellowjackets.
I too went with Lost, and lost.
My Pavlovian response to a plane crash was “Lost”. I was not familiar with “Heavenly Creatures”.
I knew it wasn’t Survivor so I too guessed Lost. I don’t get Showtime so the answer was completely off of my radar.
I guessed Survivor.
I guess that I just do not know my TV shows like I used to. Too many channels, even streaming TV shows. But alas my guess was completely wrong as I said “Lost”. Shame on me! But I do not have Showtime so I would have never got this correct. Seems like I am not the only one who guessed “LOST”!!
I hope this counts as helpful information instead of “advertising”, but I just tonight saw an ad for Paramount+ saying 99cents per month for a two month trial subscription. It mentioned saying for either of two levels (which without using those specific words sounded like basic or premium) so that sounds like it would include the version that also contains Showtime.
In a separate comment, I want to wish Jason good luck on winning more games. He does need to be careful to phrase his responses in the form of a question.
Looks like I am with almost everyone else here. I immediately went to Lost and had no idea that Yellowjackets is even a show.
I’m familiar with Yellowjackets by name, but could have told you nothing else about it. I join the masses who said Lost.
I thought that the record for most consecutive days with a new Jeopardy! champion was 14 when Tom Kelso won on Thursday September 12th 2002.
The only reason I got this is because I happened to read an article about the show in the last month. I don’t watch the show, but I was mildly curious about it.
I have seen “Heavenly Creatures” a few times, and I love it (it’s an excellent early-career directorial job by Peter Jackson). I knew it wasn’t likely to be Kate Winslett that the clue referred to, but rather Melanie Lynskey, but I could not think of a current, or recent, TV show she was in that had that “Lord of the Flies” vibe, so I was at an utter loss. It’s been a bad week for me FJ wise…
I was immediately 98% sure it was “What is Yellowjackets?” though I’ve seen neither Yellowjackets nor Heavenly Creatures, I had seen reviews and ads for the former back when it first came out (and was pretty sure that Melanie Lynskey was in it) and remembered it concerned getting stranded in the wilderness and I was pretty sure that the latter was a New Zealand film and that Melanie Lynskey is either Australian or from New Zealand which increased the chances she was in it even though I did not know that for sure. I was only 98% sure because I figured there could be a different series that fit even closer but that I did not happen to know anything about. But that doubt did not keep me from “going with” Yellowjackets.
Never really heard of “Heavenly Creatures” until now so that part of the clue was lost on me. On the other hand, I get an email from something called “TV Insider” every day. Thanks to Matt Roush’s daily article called “Worth Watching,” I knew enough from his descriptions to realize that “Yellowjackets” fit the clue well enough to go with that as my response. Not sure how I ever started getting those emails but they help in getting familiar with a lot of TV that I never ever see or would ever watch. Presumably, lots of other people get those emails unsolicited, too.
I’m guessing that you were not likely to get one of those emails in 1994 when “Heavenly Creatures” was put out 😉. Melanie Lynskey was in High School when she made that movie and now she is 48, married (to Jason Ritter), with a 6 and a half year old daughter. BTW, when Jason was about 2 and a half years old I saw him riding on his dad’s shoulders in a small craft shop in Franklin, TN, but I did not interrupt them to meet them.
