Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, October 10, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the October 10, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Classic Drama) for Friday, October 10, 2025 (Season 42, Game 25):

The line “Was this the face that launched a thousand ships?” is asked by this title character in a play written in the 16th century

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Aimée Fluitt, a former national security consultant originally from Kansas City, Missouri
Aimée Fluitt on Jeopardy!
Dave Francois, a marketing director from Denver, Colorado
Dave Francois on Jeopardy!
Spencer Janes, a program manager originally from Longmeadow, Massachusetts (1-day total: $29,000)
Spencer Janes on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

We have a new champion on Jeopardy! in Spencer Janes, who defeated 5-time champion TJ Fisher yesterday. Spencer now gets to defend his title against Dave Francois and Aimée Fluitt.

It was noticed yesterday that On Camera Audiences is now listing significantly more tape days than before in early November, increasing the number of days from 5 tape days to 9. To me, that implies an increase in postseason length in some fashion—and I am certainly happy if this is the case. I do still wish that the show would announce the postseason format well before it starts so that fans who want to can accurately track everyone’s chances, but this doesn’t seem to be the worst alternate case at this point.

In Christopher Marlowe’s late-16th century play The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus, Helen of Troy is conjured up late in the play, leading to Faustus asking the now-famed “Was this the face that launched a thousand ships?” line that is often used to refer to the Greek figure.

The best way for contestants to tackle this clue is to remember that if the clue was going to refer to Shakespeare in any way, the show would either put good ol’ Billy Shakes in the category or clue somewhere. The fact that there is zero mention should steer you away from the Bard. Contestants likely will need the full name of Doctor Faustus, though, to make sure they know it’s referring to the Marlowe play and not the archetypal Faust character itself.

5 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, October 10, 2025"

  1. Oof. I thought this FJ was brutal for regular play. I wasn’t comfortable ruling out Shakespeare, given that we had a generic “Drama” FJ a few months ago that was looking for “Desdemona” without referencing Shakespeare in the clue.

Troilus has a very similar line about Helen in Troilus and Cressida (“Why, she is a pearl whose price hath launched above a thousand ships”). That play was written within a decade of Doctor Faustus. So without either knowing the dialogue of the plays word-for-word, or that Troilus and Cressida was likely written a mere two years after the turn of the 17th century, this feels like kind of a mind-melter. I suppose if you were confident that the “thousand ships” association with Helen was first popularized by Marlowe, that could be enough to tip the scales in the right direction.

I would have likely gone with Troilus, based on a “meta” reasoning similar to the one that led you to rule out Shakespeare–it is obscure enough relative to the rest of Shakespeare’s oeuvre to make its basic plot reasonable material for FJ, and I also wouldn’t expect a regular play clue to go into Doctor Faustus without hinting at Marlowe, magic, or the devil.

Will be curious to see how it plays!

  2. I couldn’t escape the Shakespeare loop. Rough end to the week. Good game by all players; it’s a bit of a shame that it came down to poor math at the end. That being said, like I said earlier in the week, it is easier to judge the math outside of the pressure situation than in the thick of it.

  3. This line is so familiar that I came up with Faustus immediately. The only problem is that I didn’t think to include the “Doctor” part. I was hoping someone would come up with that response to see whether or not Andy was right about needing the full reference to “Doctor Faustus.” I guess we’ll never know now. Fortunately, I wasn’t on stage so it doesn’t really matter.

  4. As close as I could get was being quite confident that the “face” was Helen of Troy but I could not think of a likely character to have said that. I went with “Sinbad” with a 99% certainty that it would be wrong. At least I did not have to say “duh” upon finding out it was Doctor Faustus, because I have NEVER known ANYTHING about that character except the fact that there has been a character named that.

  5. I didn’t know FJ, as I’ve never even heard of the character.
