The show has clearly intended to write this clue to point to Francis Ford Coppola as the correct response. The first two actors to refuse their Oscar trophies were George C. Scott (Patton) and Marlon Brando (The Godfather), with Scott outright rejecting the entire purpose of the Academy Awards, while Brando was protesting the “poor treatment of Native Americans in the film industry.” Both of those films give screenwriting credit to Francis Ford Coppola.
However, there is a major issue with today’s clue as it appears as The New York Times Clue of the Day. Certainly, I have seen an inaccurate version of Final Jeopardy (due to a last-minute change) appear as The New York Times Clue of the Day, and I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if this happened today, but why wouldn’t the show use “…were for films…” instead of “…were in films…” here? Because “in” implies the actor’s entire filmography here—and guess what? I believe that introduces potential alternate correct responses to today’s Final Jeopardy clue! For example, Marlon Brando was in Candy and George C. Scott was in The Day of the Dolphin—both adapted for the screen by Buck Henry—to say nothing of the fact that Brando & Scott were both in 1980’s The Formula (written by Steve Shagan). It’s such a simple change to use “for” instead of “in” here that would completely sidestep any controversy whatsoever.

I guessed correctly. I knew Brando refused an Oscar. And of movies he was in, the only one I could guess a co-writer for a script was Godfather. So went with Francis Ford Coppola. Guessing just saying Coppola wouldn’t cut it since his daughter is also in the industry.
Suppose it was a DD:
… – Who is Coppola?
– Could you be more specific?
– Who else but Francis Ford Coppola could be meant by “this man”?
Guessed correctly. I knew Brando refused his Oscar. Coppola co-wrote with Puzo on the Godfather. I watched Patton maybe 2 months ago. Didn’t know he refused his Oscar. But nice to know now.
At first I thought this was something too obscure for me to know but I quickly remembered Brando’s Oscar refusal, which was such a big deal at the time it was even satirized on a Firesign Theatre album. I vaguely recalled George C. Scott’s refusal, but Coppola’s script work on Patton was one of those weird bits of trivia that has stayed in my mind, which led me to the right guess.
