Lindsey Chismark and Ben Dwertman are the challengers today to 4-time champion Drew Horwood! Will Drew make it 5?
Interestingly, we heard from Drew a couple of days ago! Interestingly enough, Drew has shared our frustration on his Daily Double wagering, having forgotten some of the details of his games in between taping and airing! (If you’re reading this as a prospective contestant, let that be a lesson to you!)
J! round categories:
THE MAIN ALCOHOLIC INGREDIENT
STATELY GEOGRAPHY
TONY WINNERS FOR BEST MUSICAL
MacARTHUR FOUNDATION FELLOWS
DOUBLE-LETTER 8-LETTER WORDS
& FINALLY
Ben was swaying a great deal as he was answering the questions; he seemed nervous!
After doing well in TONY WINNERS, it was Lindsey who got to play the first Daily Double, at the bottom of that category!
Scores at this point:
Lindsey $2,400
Ben $1,400
Drew $1,000
Her clue: 1949: Based on a Shakespearean romantic comedy. She got it immediately to move to $3,400.
After 15 clues, the scores sat at:
Lindsay $3,400
Ben $1,800
Drew $800
Ben said he has created PowerPoint presentations in order to teach dance fads to his friends!
Watching Alex attempt the Gangnam Style dance as he was talking was amusing. I’m interested in seeing Ben’s PowerPoint on the Harlem Shake!
Coming out of the break, Drew had the best luck on MacARTHUR FOUNDATION FELLOWS – in fact, he went 4/5 on the category! He also did well in DOUBLE-LETTER and & FINALLY to find himself in the lead at the end of 30!
I got the following Triple Stumpers: (& FINALLY $600) — It can refer to the preparatory motion of a baseball pitcher or the final action of any event and (& FINALLY 800) — “Yours faithfully” at the end of a letter is an example of a “complimentary” one of these
At the end of 30, the scores were:
Drew $5,600
Lindsay $4,400
Ben $3,600
DJ! round categories:
OFF TO A “GOOD” START
THE HITTITES
NEWSPAPER MOGULS
COLORFUL QUOTES
3-NAMED ACTRESSES
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY
The first Daily Double was found under NEWSPAPER MOGULS $1200! Ben got to play it! The scores were:
Drew $8,400
Lindsey $5,600
Ben $5,200
Ben picked $4,000 as his bet. His clue: In 1894 this man whose company later partnered with Roy Howard founded the USA’s 1st major newspaper chain. Ben’s incorrect response put him down to $1,200.
Another Triple Stumper I picked up (NEWSPAPER MOGULS $2000): In 1896 he bought the New York Times for $75,000 & created its slogan “All the news that’s fit to print”. Lindsey did well not to ring in; both Ben and Drew negged on the clue!
The final Daily Double was found under THE HITTITES $1600!
Scores at this point:
Drew $6,800
Lindsey $5,600
Ben $0
Drew bet $1,000. His clue: Most knowledge of the Hittites comes from clay tablets with writing in this wedge-shaped system. His correct response put him to $7,800.
Once again, to prospective contestants: “Why…” is in the form of a question! The 2000 clue there: Why: Because it was filled with flammable gas that was ignited by electricity, said the report of August 1937. I’m sure the writing staff has some sort of betting pool happening on whether or not the contestants reply to these sort of clues with the proper phrasing!
By the end of the end of the round, the scores were:
Drew $11,800
Lindsey $7,600
Ben $5,600
FJ! category: BRITISH NOVELS
FJ! clue: Fittingly, this Thomas Hardy character is introduced near the Pure Drop Inn
Ben 5600 – 5600 = 0
Lindsey 7600 – 6600 = 1000
Drew 11800 – 3401 = 8399
Drew’s now a 5-time champion!
Tournament of Champions update:
1. Joshua Brakhage $103,205 (5 wins)
2. Drew Horwood $79,197 (5 wins)
3. Sara Garnett $75,403 (3 wins)
I’ll be back tomorrow with another recap!
