Prisoner Of Trebekistan: An Important Read

Andy here with the recap for Thursday! Your challengers today for Keith Whitener are Sarah Hayden Williams are Erik Greb!

Alex made a mention of yesterday’s Final; noting that Keith got lucky to find such a wheelhouse question for him! Apparently Keith even wrote an essay for a contest about yesterday’s answer!

J! round categories: THE 5 SENSES, HEARING, SMELL, TASTE, SITE, TOUCHÉ

Keith still seems to have his indifference while playing; If he goes on a run, it’ll take me a long while to warm up to it!

It was Erik who got to the first Daily Double, at the bottom of HEARING (it was a legal hearing-type category) Scores:

Erik $1,200
Keith $400
Sarah $400

Erik bet just $800. His clue: This 10-letter type of hearing figures out whether someone has the mental capacity to stand trial. Answering immediately and correctly brought him to $2,000.

Keith got some good buzzer timing down between the Daily Double and an early break (after just 13 clues); scores:

Erik $2,800
Keith $2,600
Sarah $400

Sarah talked about catering her own wedding. For 300 guests. I really don’t know that many people that would be at all interested in doing that! That being said, I did ask a caterer friend of mine on Twitter the same question; her response was “Absolutely!”

It seemed as if Sarah still had difficulties ringing in during the round; meanwhile, Keith got on his roll! By the end of the round, Keith had a commanding lead! Your scores:

Keith $9,400
Erik $2,400
Sarah $400

DJ! round categories: NAME THAT CENTURY; MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS; BOOKS & AUTHORS; EURO COINS; ONE MAN, ONE BOAT; A “HA”!

The Keith show continued merrily along during this round, though Sarah got in on the following for $2000 (category A “HA”: From the 13th to the 15th centuries, commercial activity in Northern Europe was dominated by this league)

Sarah got to the Daily Double as well, under BOOKS & AUTHORS $1600! Scores were:

Keith $14,200
Erik $4,400
Sarah $2,800

Sarah bet $2,000 here. Her scores: The title of this E.M. Forster novel refers to a country house, not to someone’s death. Anyone who’s ever read Prisoner of Trebekistan would be able to get this one immediately! I guess Sarah hasn’t, as she wasn’t able to come up with an answer, sadly. Her score fell to $800.

Just after the minute-to-go signal, the final Daily Double was found by Keith under ONE MAN, ONE BOAT $1600. Scores:

Keith $16,200
Erik $4,400
Sarah $800

I’d go really small here for a bet and then run out the clock on the low-valued clues left on the board. Keith chose $2,000 (honestly, a little rich for my tastes here!). His clue: Edward Miles took the short way around, sailing solo through this canal completed in 1869. His correct answer put him to $18,200

The end-of-round signal came with 3 clues left and only 1 clue after the Daily Double, cementing Keith’s lock!

Scores going into FJ!:

Keith $18,200
Erik $4,400
Sarah $800

FJ! category: WORLD LANGUAGES

FJ! clue: Of the Romance languages, it has the greatest number of native speakers in a single country

Sarah 800 – 799 = 1
Erik 4400 + 4400 = 8000
Keith 18200 + 8000 = 26200 (2-day champ, $51,200)

(This Final was very easy for me; it helped to remember what the world’s most populous countries are!)

I feel really badly for Sarah; it just wasn’t her day, and she’s probably gong to be one of those ex-contestants who won’t want to revisit or talk about her appearance too much! I wish things had gone better for her.

Keith will get to play again tomorrow!
