What is Brooklyn?
In the 1890s, Brooklyn itself was the 3rd most populous city in America. But, New York, and some in Brooklyn (generally those who commuted to New York for work; it was estimated that a third of Brooklyn commuted at the time) became increasing in favor of consolidation. Other Brookylnites feared losing their civic identity. In 1896, the consolidation vote finally passed, and the megalopolis of New York City occured in 1898. Many Brooklynites still refer to the annexation/consolidation as “The Great Mistake of ’98.”

On 28 Sept. 2017 final jeopardy they said that Brooklyn would be the 4th most populous city in the U.S.. That can be a bit misleading due to the fact that Brooklyn is a Burough. Alex Trebek mentions New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles which were/are cities. But Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island are all Buroughs of New York City today. Where There’s 62 cities in New York and the befor Burroughs are not cities. Granted if you live in Brooklyn and asked what city you live in you’ll say Brooklyn. I could be wrong so please correct me if I am.
They said that if Brooklyn was still its own city, it would be the 4th most populous city in the U.S.
Brooklyn was annexed by NYC in 1898, at which point it became a borough.
That was the point of the clue, that if the annexation hadn’t happened, Brooklyn would be the 4th-most populous.
Hope that helps.
Please send me the “answer” in double jeopardy on September 28, 2017 which included language about middlesex county and Watertown. The correct answer was “Massachusetts “
COUNTY SEATS $1200: 19th century toilets are part of the collection of Watertown’s plumbing museum in this state’s Middlesex County
Alas, Thursday night NFL football has descended on my CBS station, and poof, no more Jeopardy so I’m glad this website exists. I would not have guessed Brooklyn although I have lived there and was a fanatic Brooklyn Dodgers fan — got to see a game in Ebbetts Field once.
Oh, my! I’m jealous. One of the chapters in my second book, The Games That Changed Baseball, is about the last game at Ebbets Field.
wonder how long Austin will last
Normally, my CBS affiliate shows Jeopardy! overnight, but they didn’t last night. AND the Bears lost. BOO!
