More information about Final Jeopardy:

Wow, there are a lot of surprises this week in Final Jeopardy! Between the “surprised” quote in yesterday’s final question and now the Surprise Symphony, it almost seems like one of the writers went down an Internet rabbit hole of “surprise” and came out bearing a pair of Final Jeopardy! clues.

The “surprise” in Haydn’s Surprise Symphony comes in the form of a fortissimo G chord in the second movement of the work. According to one story, Haydn added it on a whim because he didn’t want his student Ignaz Pleyel would not out-do him in London in the early spring of 1792. According to another, it was added because Haydn had noticed that a front row patron had fallen asleep, and thus Haydn cued an especially-loud chord to rouse the patron. According to the story, it worked.

  1. Gomer Pyle”s line, “Surprise, Surprise, Surprise” comes to my mind right away. Man, could that guy sing! RIP, Jim Nabors…

    • That’s, uh..nice:)–I hope you might also use this “occasion” to actually listen to the Symphony (#94) in question, or to any work (although this work is a nice introduction, as is any symphony from #92 through #104 IMO–his last, phew!) by this brilliant (and thoroughly enjoyable) composer…as I would recommend to anyone at all reading this who has any affinity for “Classical” music (It’s somewhat unfortunate to have to use that term for classifying his music because all those negatives that might come to mind when you hear that word are the exact opposite of what experiencing his music entails…to add “insult to injury” he is regarded as the essential composer (along w/ Mozart to an extent) in the subgenre of “classical” within Classical Music (some of the others being baroque, romantic, etc,….)
