Correct response: What is the (RMS) Carpathia?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
The RMS Carpathia became famous in April 1912 after being the boat which rescued 712 survivors from the Titanic‘s lifeboats after the Titanic’s sinking. Unfortunately, the Carpathia had not been the closest ship to the Titanic; inquiries by the United States Senate and the British Wreck Commissioner both concluded that the SS Californian could have saved many of the Titanic‘s lost lives had it responded promptly to the Titanic‘s distress signal.
The Carpathia was torpedoed by the Imperial German Navy on July 15, 1918 while it was part of a convoy between Liverpool and Boston; the only fatalities were five crew.
Since Alex Trebek’s diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, many community members have been raising money. The Jeopardy! Fan Online Store is as well! All proceeds from any “Keep The Faith And We’ll Win” shirt sold will be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. To date, over $370 has been raised.)

No way today’s clue should have been a triple stumper, but it’s always easier from home. I loved Alex’s response to the “Doria Goy” answer. A fitting end to season 35. I pray we see Alex in the fall. Great job, Andy. Thank you!

This was a miserable week of FJ conversion, which is NOT the time to go wobbly! Speaking solely for myself…
Victoria Falls is eminently gettable. There’s no good reason to brick that. Livingstone was in search of the source of the Nile — which I don’t think he ever even found — but I don’t imagine it’s particularly angelic to see! Very lucky dodge over here that James, a strong player, didn’t get there either. Incidentally, this game probably turns out differently if the last clue he selects is the $400 one that was left over and not the $2000 one on Caesura that got me into “crush” territory.
Scrabble was just about the only educated guess anybody can write there. If Boggle somehow ends up as the right answer, I’ll walk out with my head held high. Indeed John maybe “should have” wagered more on the DD, but maybe he wanted to hedge because he counted on me chumping the FJ like the day before. 🙂
Maurice Sendak came to me second — first was Norton Juster of “The Phantom Tollbooth” fame (maybe because my copy seemed really blue? — and I’m tickled it actually worked out! I think Corin indeed overbet but that’s all moot after I walked into the right answer.
My answer of Exile on Main Street resulted from a colossal misread of the clue on my part. Indeed I took “Rolling Stone album review” and mangled it into “A review of a Rolling Stones album”, which I believe ranks as one of the worst blunders I’ve ever made during anything related to trivia; I spent 15 seconds pondering whether it was that or Sticky Fingers, yeesh. Shari’s score and wager put the heat on Eric, and Eric was understandably confident that he could get it right. At least the two of them read the dang clue correctly!
The Carpathia FJ strikes me as an unusually uninteresting one, as it seems straightforwardly clued about some ship that rescued Titanic passengers and…ok, now what? I guess they allude to the name in Titanic (never saw it) but is there anything noteworthy about this ship beyond this one incident? Maybe I’m just quasi-bitter. 😉
(Incidentally, while I’m not entirely convinced I know what Lach trash means, I can’t imagine there was $27800 of it this episode. Was that a typo?)
Anyhow, it’s abundantly clear that it took a lot of luck and a little imprecise play from opponents to get this far and it’s been an absolute honor — and a lot of fun! — to take it all in this week. See you all in Season 36!
I had a pretty good week, at least on final jeopardy. I got four out of the FJ answers correct including all three of the “stumpers.” That said, I’m always impressed with the breath of knowledge that most champions and contestants possess. I possess a pretty good amount of “trivial” knowledge as an almost 70 year old, but I would totally flame out on a lot of the literature categories.
Alex’s quip about Maggie’s FJ! response was the funniest thing I’ve heard him say! I love that man’s sense of humor…see you next season sir!.
