Today’s Final Jeopardy – August 9, 2019

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Americana) for Friday, August 9, 2019 (Season 35, Episode 52, encore presentation):

It’s the official fruit of the District of Columbia

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Maya Wright, a senior from Peachtree City, Georgia (Yesterday’s total: $7,800)
Maya Wright on Jeopardy!
Claire Sattler, a senior from Bonita Springs, Florida (Yesterday’s total: $21,800)
Claire Sattler on Jeopardy!
Emma Arnold, a junior from Owings Mills, Maryland (Yesterday’s total: $19,000)
Emma Arnold on Jeopardy!

Remember, this is a two-day total-point affair. Today’s scores get added to yesterday’s to determine the champion, and because today’s scores get doubled in Final Jeopardy!, Claire has an effective lead of $1,400 over Emma and $7,000 over Maya.

Correct response: What is a cherry?

Did you know that you can now find game-by-game stats of everyone, including James Holzhauer, who has won 10 or more games on Jeopardy!, here on the site?

More information about Final Jeopardy:

Washington, DC is a city known for its beautiful cherry blossoms, after Japan sent over 3,000 of them to the United States in 1912 as a gift of friendship. DC began a two-week cherry blossom festival in the 1990s and the cherry became the official district fruit in 2006.

And because I never will pass up an opportunity for this: I dislike Parson Weems. Another point of entry into this clue, although it is entirely incorrect, is the Parson Weems mythological story about the young George Washington, enthusiastic about a new hatchet, cutting down his father’s prized young cherry tree, and having virtuously owned up to it when questioned, all is forgiven.

Since Alex Trebek’s diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, many community members have been raising money. The Jeopardy! Fan Online Store is as well! All proceeds from any “Keep The Faith And We’ll Win” shirt sold will be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. To date, over $370 has been raised.)

Looking to find out who won Jeopardy! today? Tonight’s results are below!

Scores going into Final:

Tonight’s results:

Maya $10,400 – $7,800 = $2,600 + $7,800 = $10,400 = $25,000 (What is an apple?)
Claire $16,400 – $0 = $16,400 + $21,800 = $38,200 = $100,000 (What is the apple? idk! (I [heart] U all! Thank you so much!)

  1. Thanks, Andy. Small thing – Japan gave WDC 3000 cherry trees, not 3000 cherry blossoms. Thanks as always!

  2. Wow. Not one of the teen finalists could answer this? Just Wow.

    • Maybe the mythology about George Washington chopping down his father’s cherry tree isn’t being taught now (thank goodness). Although I too hate it, I must admit that’s what steered me in the right direction…

The Japanese cherry blossom song Sakura is very pretty, uses a different musical scale (all the black notes on our piano keyboard). There’s also a famous apple blossom song, Ringo no hana, which I still can sing from memory (ringo=apple, no=possessive particle, hana=blossom). Interesting that the wrong-guessers chose the apple.
