Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The History of France) for Thursday, October 24, 2019 (Season 36, Episode 34):
This modern regime that lasted 4 years changed the national motto to “travail, famille, patrie”—”work, family, fatherland”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Mushtaq Gunja, a lawyer from Silver Spring, Maryland
Jamie Tyrrell, a test prep instructor from Rochester, New York
Allyson Samiljan, a communications & special events director from Wellington, Florida (1-day total: $9,500)
From October 19th through the 26th, Gamers vs. MS will be doing a 168-hour charity video game marathon in support of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world, with an estimated 1 in every 385 Canadians living with the disease. Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) that attacks myelin (the protective covering of the nerves), causing inflammation and damage. With that damage, nerve impulses can be completely disrupted. Currently, there is no cure. I took part in the relay last night on my own Twitch channel, with the return of the Complete the List podcast.

Correct response: What is Vichy France?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
Vichy France was the name given to the French state during World War II following the Nazi occupation of the country. Headed by Marshal Phillippe Pétain, it was administered from the unoccupied zone in the south of the country and was responsible for the remainder of the French colonial empire as well as the civil administration of the country. Due to the collaboration with the Nazis, the French state spent most of the next 50 years after World War II distancing itself from the regime (with the official viewpoint being that Vichy was an illegal government established by traitors under foreign influence). It was not until Jacques Chirac’s presidency that France began to take responsibility for the arrest and deportation of many in the Jewish community in France during World War II.

This should be relatively easy and I wonder if we get 2 or so right solutions today. But then, when it comes to foreign things – leave alone when combined with history – I wouldn’t hold my breath.
Would just Vichy by itself be acceptable?
Vichy France, Vichy, Vichy Regime, Vichy government and probably more would have been acceptable.
I sure think so. And ” The History of FRANCE” was already in the clue, plus “Vichy” by itself equals France if you have some idea about WWII.
I cannot believe this was a Triple Stumper! Yesterday’s question, I understand. But Vichy France during WWII should have been 2 or 3 correct, especially with the “Fatherland” reference. I’m glad the TOC starts in 2 weeks. Maybe the experienced champs like James Holzhauer and Alan Dunn (the only TOC contestant with 100% accuracy in FJ) will give us some big scores again.
Just as I thought. On top of last Friday’s TS we are now 1/12 this week in FJ.
Since the “Ancien Regime”and then after Napoleon B., N. III and the revolution in 1848 there were/are only “republics” and not regimes in France, currently holding at # 5.The first republic ended when Bonaparte declared himself “Emperor”. And a new champ – congratulations, Mushtag- as I thought in my post yesterday. But: a win is a win is a win, so congrats to him. The #s before FJ were not bad but “foreign” combined with “history” proved to be too much again.
Jamie won the game.
Yeah, sorry, my bad. It was not even 6AM here……also need some more coffee that early…😀
Regime doesn’t have to have negative connotations. It can just reference any government.
I couldn’t remember the name but I knew it was France during WWII… wonder if that would have been enough?
I don’t think so. THEORETICALLY Vichy was “unoccupied” France and thus not under Hitler’s rule. But only in theory. If Hitler said “jump”, they asked “how high?”. A lot of deportations to concentration camps went through Vichy, the “unoccupied” part of France. Reminds me of the movie “Casablanca”.
Makes sense, thanks Sean!
Another triple stumper this week.
There was an answer in Double Jeopardy (don’t remember the category). None of the contestants rang in. The question was “What is Zumba?” I don’t record the show .Where can I re-watch the full episode to get the answer. Or do you know? Thanks.

I wonder why more 3rd place contestants don’t bet $0 in Final Jeopardy. Allyson would have won with this strategy.
