More information about Final Jeopardy:

Construction of the Panama Canal took nearly a decade; the original plan was to build a sea-level canal across Panama. However, that was judged to be futile by the project’s second engineer, railroad builder John Frank Stephens. It was then decided to build an inland lake 85 feet above sea level which would be accessed by a series of locks. The canal finally opened to traffic in 1914 and it revolutionized world transportation, as ships no longer needed to go around South America to go between the eastern and western coasts of North America by sea.
